Any recommendations for classic car gauge repairs?

Does anyone have any recommendations for any companies to try, to repair gauges on classic cars?

Both the 1986 Ferrari Testarossa (Veglia Borletti) and 1956 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 Odometers need some attention, also the speedometer on the Oldsmobile needs some TLC.

2x specialist companies I reached out to can’t help due to a lack of parts, which surprises me as they can deal with antique cars and gauges for much older and newer cars etc.

Thanks in advance

I’m imagining these are one you’ve tried

Yeah they can’t help, nor can https://www.classicsparesengineering.co.uk/

I may have to try and attempt a repair myself if no joy, previously managed to repair my Ferrari Mondial Tachometer - replaced the failed signal IC…

Hopefully he will be a man in a shed who cannot fix anything for a fiver.
Peter the specialist just replied, he only does classic motorcycles…. Have pinged a few more specialists, otherwise there’s an advert I spotted for in Germany to do the Testarossa at least but at Testarossa prices £350 + shipping etc. Will keep hunting

is this a mechanical sort of problem or electronics related? I can get into most electronics problems, and happy to look at the issue if you get stuck.

I just gave them a call, they can indeed do the Ferrari and it’s a maybe on the Oldsmobile! Will send them details and photos…. Thank you very much, appreciate the tip!

I may have a cheeky look myself once I’ve taken the instruments… some photos of doing the tacho on the Mondial used to have. May be lucky could be a simple IC gone on the F, but the Olds I suspect will be purely mechanical

Thank you I appreciate the help, the Ferrari will be I suspect electronic and Olds mechanical…. I know this is a Maserati forum, but should be useful for restorers / owners for these older cars etc.

Hi Mike
I visited Melvin Rutter in Bishop's Stortford the Morgan dealer a while back, they do restorations there, they had a guy in house who specialised in gauge repairs, all makes. Might be worth a call.

Hi All.

As an update all the UK companies I have tried either won’t respond or can’t help due to parts being NLA for the Veglia Borletti odometer in the Testa…. After an initial positive enquiry with a couple of companies, no joy.

The Oldsmobile looks to be more promising with quite a few places confirming they can fix the odometer, so will be removing that soon and sending off for repair.

So I’ve decided to have a go myself (previously managed to repair a failed Tachometer on another classic Ferrari, replacing a failed IC) and fix the Veglia Borletti unit, information and parts seem very scarce on the internet unfortunately too….

I have taken lots of photos and documented steps so far via another Forum:

In summary it’s looking positive, bit more work to be done:-
  1. The plastic and metal gears are all in very good condition, greatest fear was that these were damaged and I would have to somehow reproduce them…. Old grease cleaned off and regreased now.
  2. The electric motor driven by pulses is working fine after I tested it, another major issue if it wasn’t working and no replacements available
  3. The distance rolling counters and mechanisms are also all in great condition
  4. Now the issue is pinpointed to the electronics side, that all mechanicals are fine. Much easier to sort....
Have spotted some dry solder joints and PCB tracks starting to fail, will look to repair and refurb those now. Also replace the Transistors and ICs, as most likely cause of failure being one of the ICs.

Some photos attached, but more on the other forum thread. Including parts list from a fellow friendly Australian.

Thought I would share on this forum too, as I’m sure in the future there will be some issues with gauges on these ageing Maseratis etc. Especially as both Maserati and Ferrari spare parts supply chains are poor in comparison to other marques.
