My son had a lot of problems getting a decent price on his Golf GTi aged 18years.

In the end he used Adrian flux, but a specialist policy for modified cars, he was changing the exhaust anyway and the price suddenly became much more reasonable.

I am guessing one other problem this young chap is facing is using it for business, that commands a premium anyway and more so on a performance car I am sure.

In fairness, he did have an insurance company offer him a policy, then he agreed to buy the car, then the insurance company backed out.

Oh, that’s different then, that’s not playing fair at all. Hope he gets sorted out

Still need insurance though.
I had trade plates for 20 years before leaving the UK.
Is the insurance 'cheaper' ie blanket without loading for any high-spec cars?

Moot anyway, can't really drive about on trade plates....

All the vehicles you have have to be declared and updated on the MID database so they no exactly what you have.
I used to insure the Ferrari and Maserati separately with Adrian Flux.

He might get a reduced premium if he has access to a second car such as his parents or a flat mates etc.
Also play with where the car is kept over night (in the street can be cheaper than on the driveway if it can't be garaged), annual mileage (lower the better obvs), post code, named drivers (mummy for example).

When I was in Ireland I found a co that offered 'open drive' seemed to be I could drive any car fully comp and anyone could drive mine same and full EU 12 months cover, breakdown, the absolute lot, €1600 not bad for Ireland but I never regged car in IE so that was it.

Company was in Stilorgan if Zags is interested, seemed a decent set of folks....

Has he tried LV? They do my modified Abarth, all mods declared. They tend to do a lot of the youngsters I know.

I was with LV for the Subaru and s2000 but they wouldn't insure my maser 5 years ago - so I'm no longer with them.

£6,800 is the "we don't want to insure you" number, you're not actually supposed to take them up on it. :D

Try A Plan Thatcham office , don't just ring A plan , it has to be thatcham , they specialise in high performance cars specifically at that branch

I had one of the previous Mas's insured through A-Plan at Thatcham and at the time they were very good. When renewal was due the policy was transferred to a branch near me for 'administrative reasons'. The local branch didn't seem to understand the term 'customer service' so they lost my business and I will never use A-Plan again.

Am currently talking with A-Plan via Cherished cars at the moment - they have agreed a generous value on my car of £24k:) and £40 for breakdown - including European - not the actual cheapest quote, but could be best value for money - just got a few more things to clarify

That sounds pretty decent Roary and I agree about pricing and vfm, but for me customer service counts a lot; the day that I shopped around for the cheapest quote has long since passed, and for years I've been happy to pay for decent service - which I now get from NFU. Touch wood I've not had to make a claim since insuring with them so I can't comment on that aspect, but thus far I like the way they do business and the staff I've dealt with have been excellent.
