Any 4200s in Bristol / Bath + AC Noise after Aux Change

Hi All,

So very annoyingly having sorted a new alternator and aux belt with reasonable ease... no more than a few days have passed (and very few miles) before a series of belt related noises have started that seem to be AC related. It's coming and going a little at the moment but my initial instinct says it will get worse. Not sure what the gas level is like... I guess I can get that checked... but its a mechanical grumble and whine not a gassy noise. I guess that the new belt and tensioner would have put a lot more pressure on it... any thoughts on this or does it seem a likely and inevitable outcome?

From a quick read it sounds like a pain in the backside to swap the compressor so beyond a semi-competent but somewhat time poor DIY'er?

On another note... are there any 4200 owners in the Bristol / Bath area who would be game to meet up briefly? I'd be really keen to look and listen to a few other 4200's... just to get a better impression of what creaks and strains are normal service and thus to be better able to tell if anything is off. Nothing too specific yet... but the more I tinker the more I get paranoid so it would be cool to have a couple of cars side by side. Always nice to have a drive and chat as well!

Cheers,

Chris

Sorry mine is in storage.

FYI the pully bearing is a know weak point and goes from noisy to seized rather quickly.

That's a bu99er...
As above- they do go bad. Seizing is an "all stop" episode...
My current understanding is that the ac pump will need replacing if this is the cause but I could be wrong.
Just to add more good news, I think the source of reasonably priced alternatives has all but dried up too....!

If it is the case that you need a new air con compressor then try Compressortech, Warwick. They sorted me out a new compressor at very reasonable price in comparison to the MD.

I live and work in bath but own a 3200 so difficult to compare my car with your issue. If you dont have any joy from other SM members locally to compare cars directly then I know someone in Trowbridge that knows his ac systems and sorted mine.

I would be happy to listen and show you mine (no smutt please) but as I said mine is SORN.

I’d suggest an automotive stethoscope (or a long screwdriver to the ear to pinpoint the noise. If it is a rumble then you have trouble in the post. The bearing spins in the housing, wrecking the casting, which is why you need a new one rather than a rebuild. Compressortech in Warwick are nice chaps, I used to work over the road from them. compressor express might be slightly cheaper though.

The replacement is a bit of a pig as it is a manifold off job, not beyond the home mechanic if you have a good way of lifting the car.

Hi there,

I'm not too far away with my Gransport but I'm currently fixing some bits and pieces on it so it wont be driveable for a few weeks but could meet up then.... I changed the AC on my old 3200 which was doable at home - not sure how the 4200 is different though?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses... I'll send some PM's to the locals...

Did some more reading last night and it doesn't sound like a super fun job to be going at on axle stands... though proven possible by one member. I will test a little more later in the week and see where we end up. Annoying!

Anyone know how much the engine needs to be lifted to get the manifold off? Are we talking a few inches or a lot? Other than the general phaff of it... that seems to be the 'intimidating' step that is most off-putting.

Cheers,

Chris

It’s not far, as it is limited by the bell housing / body clearance anyway, no more than an inch or so.

As Peter says, its a seized nose bearing in the AC pump that is now spinning in the housing so its not repairable.

Also, dont bother with used. Any pump that has been removed and open to the elements for only a day will seize internally.

Your best bet is an aftermarket one that can be had for around £250:
https://www.autoairconparts.co.uk/c...matic-may-2002-to-nov-2007-part-14-2074p.html

If left, and Peter will testify, the whole unit will seize and take your Aux belt off rendering the car underivable.

Fitting is a bit of a pig so factor in a specialist labour charge of a similar cost to the pump above.

That’s a bloody good price! Buy it before it’s gone :D

Well it looks like someone has taken that advice and got in there before I could even consider it because over the last 2 mins... it's gone from 1 left to out of stock.

Thanks for the link Matt and thanks to whoever jumped in that grave...

Has anyone got the OE part number?

Those guys actually list 2 parts depending on whether you search for Maserati Coupe (which gives the cheaper pattern part) or Maserati 4200 (which gives a more expensive but still very competitive part for what is claimed to be an original part).

Pattern / Coupe: https://www.autoairconparts.co.uk/c...4200-2006-4-2-petrol-manual-automatic-3295128

OE / 4200: https://www.autoairconparts.co.uk/c...-automatic-jan-2004-to-2017-part-14-1229.html

The diagrams show these as being quite different. Different pulley sizes, different inlet outlet sizes for the AC hoses and more significantly the mounting holes and pulley offset are also different... so one is definitely not going to fit!

If I can get the original part number I will email them to establish whats what.

Cheers

EDIT - Pretty sure its the latter with OE part number 1230F... I will speak to them now to establish availability.

This is the Delphi part number if that helps.

The one on the actual compressor is a bit blurry, sorry.

I looked into this before and got very confused. The smudged number on Zep's picture is 01139519. The replacement part picture is 1021DPSS and 01141021

As far as I can tell any of the following numbers is apparently fine but you can search them individually and find variances in pulley diameter and hole size so I remain confused!

OEM:

  • 01316154746.B
  • 02195124613.B
  • 06034122838.B

  • 11192145338.B
  • 11296053321.B
  • 227531
  • 263172 (this is the number Eurospares quote for a Gransport)
  • 263174
