So what's the latest regarding bringing a car back from Italy into the UK?

I remember carnets back in 1992 when living in Spain

If your talking as a permanent import into the UK then an import entry is required and the relevant duty and taxes have to be paid which will vary depending on the age of the vehicle.

If its coming into the UK and then going back to Italy afterwards either a Carnet or temp import for return in an unaltered state.

To clarify the unaltered state. The item can be repaired if it breaks down while in the country in order to maintain it and or keep it working for its purpose. However you can not upgrade or repair any part of it that is not needed to keep it operating. So you cant do any restoration work for example but you can change the exhaust or tyres if they blew.

What's the skinny with taking ones car on a temporary basic for work?

You just need your green card insurance and V5 and driving licence.

How long you can keep it out of the UK depends on your insurance cover.

Im assuming your meaning a few weeks or month at a time.

This says I don't need a green card which seems odd.

Salient points, some irrelevant..

  1. I have an Irish (Republic) driving licence
  2. NI regged car
  3. UK Insurance

I will..

  1. Be in Belgium on contract back in UK probably after but no guarantee
  2. Car will go on Belgian temporary plates after 90 days
  3. Will be insured in Belgium, after the 90 days I get with my UK insurance
