My 10yo son does it with copious overuse of like and basically! Glad to see my money is being well spent on his education! He is a very bright kid but I can't stand this new age speak.

I get moaned at every time I pull him up on each instance of like or basically & for speaking Australian!
In English it’s ‘like’ and ‘yer know’, German ‘genau’ and in Russian it’s ‘vot’ and ‘tipa’...

Redundant words, for thinking time, very useful when you’re speaking a language other then your own.

Genau means exactly. As an expression of agreement. It used as a way of understanding too

The one I still find hard is Russian expression ‘Da nyet’, literally means ‘Yes no’ but really means ‘yes I mean no’. I think. So it means ‘No’ so why not just say ‘No’?
