Alternative to a GranCabrio

Always fancied the GranCabrio - but £40k plus and old technology and depreciation puts me off.
Looking at a 2016 BMW 6 convertible only 8k miles from main dealer which is less than £30k. Any thoughts please

BMW = A car with little class or style and as common as muck... but a good car.

Tech - That is just provided by a manufacturer to distract you from how boring the car is.

Grancab looses far less than a BMW as they were never discounted as much.

Not much depreciation on Gran Cabs now, and not many about. Unlike the (perfectly competent but utterly soulless) BMW.

GC wins every time. Driven the BMW a few times and own a GC. Not even in same parish for grins and class.

I like 2016 6 series range....Yes not as individual as the Grancab but it all depends what you are after and what engine is in the 6. The 6 will be easier on the wallet I would think but will, still, have a way to fall depreciation wise.....I would drive one and see what you think...Probably not the place to ask as most will say Grancab but if you want an everyday car it's the BMW.....Better built and probably more reliable but I'm sure some will argue that one.....

Unless it’s got adaptive damping the ride on a 6 and a 5 for that matter is rock hard.

I owned a 6 cab and it was a bloody brilliant car - I used it as a daily driver.

A few observations from me:

1 - as in any 4 seater cab, you get lots of wind noise / buffetting unless you install a wind deflector. And then you can't use the rear seats.
2 - But this doesn't matter as the rear seats in the 6 are useless. Impossible to get into and no space for adults (unless the driver is a midget and the passenger is prepared to have their knees up around their ears. And it is a horrible place to be wen the roof is up
3 - was ultra reliable mechanically but I had more than my share of electrical gremlins (cd changer, head up display, adaptive cruise control)
4 - nobody pays any attention to it - which was good for me.

Personally I think you are kidding yourself if you think that the repair bills on a 6 will be any less than on a Maserati if something big goes wrong. That said, servicing and general running costs will be lower.

Quite right. Bought a 2010 Grancab a year ago, and smile every time I get in it. I get nothing but compliments from others on the road and wherever I’m stopped and sound is to die for.

I’m in my 50’s and have no interest in all the lane keep park assist tech nonsense, as I managed my driving up to now without any of it. I can Bluetooth my phone for calls and music from my iTunes and that’s good enough for me. Grancab has looks soul passion and sound in abundance. We may be forced electro at some point soon, so enjoy it whilst you can!

Or buy a low mileage 2014/15 Jaguar XK convertible assuming you don’t need to use the rear seats other than for dogs or additional luggage. All aluminium body and chassis, 5.0 V8 engine makes a wonderful noise and is actually reasonably economical, and Jag parts and service reasonably priced. Also not common and have that sense of occasion. One of the best kept secrets out there. I love mine and have had a 2017 Grancab too

....once followed by a 6 series owner who stopped and politely commented the GC was in a different league. QED

I had a 996 at the time and was blown away by how much fun it was.

Always used to be a fan of BMW and until 2014 always had one in my fleet the last being a 95 E36 M3 3.0 bullet proof.
When in New Zealand and working on some modern ones the quality is not what it was 20 years ago sad to say.
