I think I would get Halfords to change the bike and the cassette as well to get a matching 8 speed cassette. Pain in the button useless muppets!

One quick question about the frame size. The guy in Halfords said I needed a 20" frame and I am 6ft tall but with slightly shorter than average leg. With seat in lowest position I can stand on toes bent with ball of JUST touching the floor. Not sure if the frame is borderline too big and if next size down is better? I understood though that maybe bigger frame was better to allow larger pedal circle and straighter less bent knees. Would that make sense?

Obviously I'm not growing any more so is a frame that is JUST the right size better than stepping down a size and moving the seat up a bit?

Not quite sure what 20” relates to as I’m on a 54” at 5ft7 . I think the guy has given you the wheel size there. The size of th bike won’t really alter the turning circumference, most crank arms as stock are 172.5 regardless of frame size. Another mind field later on.... you then start looking at oval cranks lol. If yours is a 9speed on the rear and you have the same cassette on the trainer then the only issue is setup.

Looks like the frame size is right after some research. Just need to get them to change the bl00dy bike!

The long arm is definitely the issue and it is noted in the Tacx docs and web site. I just had no idea what that meant. Now I know. I'll just get Halfords to change the bike to the 24 speed and I think that will solve my issue then all good.

Never chuffin easy is it. The 27 speed I have is 20" with 18" option. The 24 speed is 19" or 21" which is annoying. Will need to go 19" I think as 21" will be too big.

Basically, you want your seat height set so that when the heel of your foot is flat on the pedal you are comfy on your seat, then when you are clipped in to the pedals, this will give you the right pedalling circle, your hips shouldn’t roll when pedalling, everything should be in line and your legs like independent pistons.

Btw I never thought it would involve so much research or learning! I just wanted a training bike setup....how hard can it be? Well as it turns out.......

I hope you are going to provide a summary when all is complete

Training Machine
Bike
Cassette
Tools
Software
Screens
Pedals & Shoes
Clothing

etc. etc. etc.
I will do all except pedals, shoes and clothes. Might be a sane step too far to wear all the clobber while static in my garage! Missus thinks I'm nuts at the best of times.

All this talk of bikes and trainers prompted me to get back on mine in Zwift this morning... really enjoyed it, and a good 1hr 20 mins workout.

It’s definitely worth the effort getting it set up, and I still find it amazing how immersive it is... today I had planned to just do a gentle 60 mins ride, but found myself riding with a couple of other riders, and we paced each other up and over the King of the Mountain loop...

Indeed, just gone old school and cycled my bike up to woods, utterly brilliant and not a garage wall to stare at in sight.

Set mine up this morning. Not too much trouble, just waiting for my Ant+ to be delivered at some point today.
Also realised that I don’t have a Mac to HDMI cable so have ordered one of those so I can get Zwift on the tv.

Should be good to go later this afternoon and full set up tomorrow night.

I know 2/3 of sod all about bikes, but how can you tell if your heel is flat if you're clipped in (i.e. your ball is set on the pedal0/

Only curious!

C you do it before you clip in. Sit on bike, roll pedal to south position, put heel on pedal, if leg bent, get off and raise seat, repeat until set. Then clip in, with your ankle movement this should give a safe stress less pedal stroke. If your hips are rolling your seat is too high[/QUOTE]

All set up. Zwift set up had a quick peddle and the gears keep skipping. A quick examination shows that my rear barrel adjuster is not in the screw hole so will have to loosen the gear cable completely screw it back in and then adjust the cable accordingly. What a ball ache!

Is it possible to set up the forum on the screen of this trainer thingy? Then we could set up a "motivational" thread where everyone can come and give encouraging words... :auto182:
