I fancy a folding electric bike, that I can slowly turn the juice off as I get fitter, I am so weak now, after heart issue and pancreas, I'm kind of wary of overdoing it despite doc saying just go for it...

Bit of a minefield tho, some I see advertised are technically mopeds in UK, need insurance, number plate etc....

My dad only got into cycling 2years ago (hence he’s now roped me in) after 2 heart attacks ,weighing 17stone and a new knee he decided he needs to do something about it. 2years on I’ve never seen him so fit, off most his meds and nearly touching the 13stone mark. Get yourself a heart rate monitor and be sensible and join the club

Heart rate monitor an absolute must.

Indeed,

Dean, can't wait until you start asking about Functional Threshold Testing & VO2 Max - my tip is - dont, we're too old for all that pain....

Mind FTP testing for 20 minutes is a great way to do all your exercise in one day......

Yep, As an ex-squaddie I have pretty much pushed my physical self to its limits,

FTP - Was something else, killer 20 minutes, but lets not spoil it for Dean...

I know! But it's the fear, I went swimming and whilst a poor swimmer, only learned to swim about 7 years ago, I can do a length or two, but I'm exhausted, more poor technique, ticker doing 10 to the dozen, I can feel it pumping and it's very disconcerting.

Maybe cos I know now I have this issue and am aware of it.
.

Find a good personal trainer. Being uncomfortable is normal when you're pushing your limits. Find someone who can coach you through that.

It’s an interesting question whether the beep test or a FTP test pushes you more to the max... both are properly hard! However, I’d add a full-on 2km rowing time trial and say it trumps both.. hands down!

Yep - Done that loads, but,
Here's a fact - Paul (Gazza) Gascoine got to higher levels than I ever did, think he got something like level 18..

I've never done FTP. Beeps are horrid. Never got anywhere like that.

Yeah done that Jon, think I had a best in the 6:40's, a guy I used to row with used to talk about strategy, warm up, hard as poss for 20 secs, try and settle into an avearge, say 1:40 for 500m then flogg yourself for last 500,

All hard tests...

Crikey....lots of double Dutch being spouted. I agree with C....should be FTPS!

Just picked up my Flux. Not got a bike yet though. Bit of a complication in that the website said it needed a bike with a 9/10/11 speed rear cassette. That rules out most budget bikes and the one I had in mind. So left the bike for a bit more thought.

Then I get the Flux box in the house and see a little sticker on the side of the box that says 8-11 speed! That changes the game a bit and brings in the cheaper 24 speed options.

Cassette's are cheap as chips and dead easy to change Dean,
So you can buy a budget bike and fit a cassette, my high range one was only £30...

There's more technique involved in rowing than the other two. Particularly important under stress when the technique breaks down.
Individual anatomy/dynamics are just as important imho. Rowing favours length whereas it can be a disadvantage in beep.
Take Catman for example. He's a lanky streak of **** (no offence ) who'd probably be better suited to the rhythm of rowing instead of the stop-start beep.
