Advice on alcantara retrim for steering wheel+ gear lever for Quattroporte Sport GT S

Hi guys

I wanted to retrim my leather steering wheel and gear lever for my QP Sport GT S 4.7 in alcantara as the car was sold in standard guise.

I heard good things about Jack at royal steering wheels so I called him and he said he can do the job but that that his alcantara is more black than the slightly grey alcantara used by Maserati.

I really wanted to have it look just like a factory fitted model so I'm not sure who to turn to.

I called Maserati but they wanted £1900 for a new alcantara steering wheel !!!

I have enclosed a picture of how the wheel looks on a standard QP Sport GT S.

Please share any advice or thoughts you might have.

Thanks in advance.

Hi mate. Looks very nice indeed but it's definately a different shade of black.
The Maserati one looks more grey don't you agree ?

While they are good at retrimming wheels, do they know the style of your QP wheel?
They did mine only a few months ago and I believed it was the first Maserati wheel they had done. If you said Maserati, he might be thinking of my style of wheel, the QP wheel is way more complicated!
Regarding colour shade...I would still go with the black, or get him to post you a few samples?

Lot's of good reviews of Jack's work....Lots of chaps on the BMW M3 forum used them and have been very pleased. Must be worth a call and see what they say.

I do like the feel & look of an alcantara wheel and I have to say Mike, yours looks fantastic

I would not go 100% alcantara. I stuck to the east-west perforated leather where you keep your sweaty hands most of the time!

Thanks mate. You're right as good as his work and reputation is he has little experience of maserati. For me that's not so much a problem more that he only has the deep black alcantara as on yours and I want it to look 100% factory original.

Chris is yours all leather ? mine is alcantara on the GTS much prefer it to the leather on the GT

Hey yea, all leather with the perforated leather around the bottom section. I would keep the perforated leather and combine it w/alcantara.

I called a place in Northern Ireland ref to the Alcantara, the reply I got was

"We don't work with Alcantara as it is very thin, although a similar effect can be achieved using up turned leather @ £100 inc vat."

How similar is the backend of leather to Alcantara and is that true ref to Alcantara being thin?

A discerning eye can spot it easily, leather or suede is just so much more coarse and irregular grained and yes Antarctica is thin but fairly tough. Upturned leather is just that, you are not really meant to see the underside. You do ultimately get what you pay for.

Surely if the guy prefers not to work with a thin yet durable material like Alcantara demonstrates his/her skill level?
