Acceptable amount of uneven tyre wear (and tyre life)?

Well I put on new PS2s all round 4k miles ago and had the alignment done by someone lots of people trust at the same time. Anyway, all four tyres are showing 1mm less tread on the inside than the outside (5-6mm on the front and 4-5mm on the rear). Obviously some cars are set up in a way which can lead to this but the question is is this the correct experience or not for a 4200GT?

I'm also not going to get many miles out of the rears (7k miles in total?). I drive a lot of B roads and like to drive the car as intended (no smoky starts mind) and wonder if a different brand will give me greater life next time? I had planned to put another pair of PS2s on the back in a few months as the fronts will last the same again but even after a nice discount, two PS2s are not much less than four F1s. Any thoughts?

The wear your experiencing Bigob is quite normal with the standard geo set up , these cars are well known for inner tyre wear its par for the course unless you change the set up, which i had done by a local guy , Last september i put on 4 Vredstein ultrac sessanta's great grip wet or dry , now done 6K miles and 4mm left all round no noticable inner tyre wear as yet , and they were only £126 and £134 respectively from Camskill.co.uk

I've got a set of the Vreds on the back as well and like the tyre. I've done 6k miles roughly and they look to have about 4-5mm left in them with no noticeable extra wear on the inside (but might need to check more carefully). The fronts have some budget Firestones on them and still have 4mm or so left on them after more than 13k miles!

Although I like the Vreds, I might go for the F1s next time as I like the tyre and I got over 20k out of a set on my Jag. Ok that was a slush auto with only 240bhp so I can't expect that on the Maser, but still I was well impressed by the life and they are of course well known to be a good tyre. I remember getting only 10k miles out of a (rear) set of Kumho tyres fitted by the dealer on a BMW 528 Sport Auto (only 192bhp) and swapping for the F1s on that was a revelation (somehow harder wearing but felt more secure and quieter).

It's always going to be a toss up between the Vreds and F1s for me.

Saw the Dutchies were cheap on Camskill - £450 for all four I seem to remember but that might be wishful thinking.

Thanks for comfirming things about the geo Loz.

Being in the land of the jock, next November I am going to be sensible and go for some winter tyres - they are all pretty ££ though.

BTW what's the downside of having the geo altered to give more even wear?

Cant say ive noticed any yet for general driving, best thing with Vredsteins is their track record iwas predominantly in winter tyres and their move some years ago into the regular market has seem them grow phenomenally, they will be one of the market leaders in a few more years , great all round tyres as far as im concerned as are all the stats

Bigbob, 1mm is fine, what is not fine is 0mm on the inner edges and 5mm on the outer edges of the front wheels, like I have.

I do like F1's and will change this time round from the OEM fitment but that may turn out to be the Falkens.

Anyone got any negatives on the Falkens before I commit?

Nice feedback guys. Its good to know that a 1mm spread across the tyre is reasonably normal.

Yep it can and is possible to Geo out. Car drives much better too!

Have F1s on the car and am very happy with them, hoping to get them on track at some point...

Just had some work done to the beast, my mechanic noted one tyre worn down to the canvas on the inner edge on the passenger side rear.

Not really clued in about the geometry or alignment of the wheels etc.....nor about changing it .....wondering whats best to do?

Rears apparently wear on the inside on standard set up but if one side is worse then you need it dealt with.

Key point is that few people know what they are doing. Do Charles Hurst have a machine? If not who do they use?

No idea BB if they do...plus 170 mile round trip...will check locally...pity that it seems to be beyond the ability of the majority of garages!

I think the issue is that lots of garages tell you they can do it but they often cannot. There is a great place in Edinburgh (Sighthill) if you can get over here.

I don't think the Missus would buy the excuse......."Am just going to get the wheels aligned....see you on Monday"!

Don't forget the marker pen and hole-punch P. They got me an o'level in metalwork (toasting fork project), so you're bound to need them...... :)
