So, this was a message I received this morning re an advert I have on the Ferrari Owners Club site for my 599.................

can you give me more details on this advert? whats the condition and payment options?

My reply...........
Dear Mikel,
I had a full advert on Pistonheads but took it down temporarily because of the virus problem.
Here is the advert.............
I am a private seller and payment would have to be cash in full. I don't offer credit.

If you are still interested, i am happy to send you pictures of the car, it is in excellent condition.

Best regards

Philip Taylor

Your proposed price is fine with me, my location is Savannah GA.can you please send me more recent pictures if any

and can you give more details on the present condition before we proceed. I suggest we hire an inspector to

appraise/inspect and confirm the legitimacy of ownership so as to report accordingly before we can proceed to

making payment. JandT is an international company and have worked with them in a couples of times, an agent close

to you will be assigned to carry out the inspection. The cost of the inspection to cover transportation, hotel and

other expenses should be around $200 which i suggest should be split and be paid by the both of us at $100 each so

as to limit the cost of risk in case the seller is not legit or the condition of the advert is not as good as claim

by the seller. the seller will be fully reimbursed and full payment would be made available to the seller same day

after inspection and before pickup. let me know if you will be willing to split the inspection cost and if you will

like to proceed by sending me your full name and inspection address to be forwarded to the inspector from JandT

Inc. to contact you on best inspection date and time. Thanks

I wrote back to him..............
Dear Mikel,
I do not want to do business in this manner. You come to me in UK to look at it, you like it, you buy it for cash and pay before removal and you export it to USA or whatever you want to do with it.
I will pay nothing towards inspection, that is a stupid idea.
Are you a SCAMMER? I think so!
Philip

What is it with scammers at the moment, firstly it was the guy who wanted bitcoins in exchange for not sending all my friends pictures of me watching ****. Now someone wants to scam me out of $100.
My question to all is this one doesn't seem worth it for a hundred dollars. Or am i missing something?

It could just be the hook and then something goes wrong with the payment. The $200 seems way too cheap

I had a few chancers when I was selling my 4200. A bloke on the rigs wanted to buy it for his son for his 18th birthday.

Just ignore them, don't respond. There's plenty of Ferraris in the states, and yours is RHD, so why would anyone from the US or Europe want to buy a car from the UK?

Best one I had was a guy from France who wanted me to drive my 4200 to Dover so he could come over on the ferry to pick it up , I declined, then it went on for weeks, phone calls, questions, pictures , he was going to come and pick it up , it was winter so I wasn't bothered ,I wanted a deposit , he refused, finally I asked for his name and proof of who he was or I was just blocking him
I got a youtube link

When I was buying a dog, a scammer stares they had one which I could have for free.

They stated they had lost their home and had to go into rented and just wanted a good home for the dog.

All sounded plausible until they emailed to say the dog had to go that weekend but they could fly it down from Scotland if I payed in advanve for 50% of the flight at £200.

When I was looking for accommodation in Dublin I came across a lot of scammers, best (ie stupidest) one was a 2 bed apartment, with parking space and on-prem gym, city centre right on the Liffey. Think it was €900 ppm.

Lass offering it said she was in Portugal at the moment so I can't be shown around but I could go down and look through the windows only I had to be discrete. If I liked it I'd then send the deposit and a months rent up front to secure it. FFS, who falls for these tricks?

So many scams are so transparent I am amazed anyone falls for them, but I guess they do.

I sold my 4200 to a bloke in France, he was English though and I was initially suspicious but he was all good, he was working abroad as an airline engineer, which was ironic. He paid via bank transfer before picking up the car.

Could the two incidents be linked to you being hacked?

Trust your intuition...if it seems a bit
unconventional then steer well clear is my advice.
When I was trying to sell my QP back in February, I did have a potential buyer who was willing to pay the asking price (no negotiation!...which I thought was a bit odd) but with hard cash, not by bank transfer, which immediately raised my suspicions. Having spent a lifetime working in a commercial environment, I was acutely aware of the money laundering risks and in this instance all of my alarm bells were ringing loud and clear. When I politely declined the opportunity the guy was really not happy. Never heard from him again.

So.... pinching this thread.....

If there was a safe and secure buying and selling transaction service you could use that did all the KYC by verifying passport, driving licence and reconciling against the V5C, both physically and electronically with the DVLA in real time that protects both buyer and seller from both fraud and personal risk, where both the transaction is done instantly, securely and guaranteed plus all V5C deregistration and registration is done immutably and immediately at the same time, plus receipt and invoice and option to tax the car........ phew,,,,, would you use it???

Yep..its not just the counterfeit angle to worry about but also the 'dirty' money. If it is cash secured through 'ill gotten gains' then virtually impossible to spot.

When I advertised my 4200 I had call from someone in Denmark who wanted to offer me asking price sight unseen. Yeah right. I was very cynical and almost hung up on him, but he offered to send a sizeable deposit right away which got my attention. He flew over, (nice chap) I picked him up from Gatwick, bought him a beer in his hotel, long test drive next day, quick inspection at Giallo, all good to go. Then he found he could not get insurance in Denmark deal was off. what a bloody waste of time. gave him his deposit back....car went to Australia two weeks later

Out of interest, do those money laundering risks still exist for the seller if you'd gone with him to your bank and let them count and accept the cash into your account there and then?

No , the bank will record and flag any payments in or out of the account over £9999 if its in cash they may well ask you to fill out some forms but not always , if you wearing dark glasses and carrying a violin case under your arm expect to be detained lol
