A Last Ditch Attempt

Unfortunately I missed this auction but looking at some of the prices it looks like buyers were few and had short arms and deep pockets. There were also some quite tatty cars which never encourages people to open they wallet very far.

I'm with the Sporting Bears at the NEC Classic Car and Restoration Show later month - it'll be interesting to see how busy it is, especially at the business end.

Yes, I was very hopeful as I could see that a lot of people were watching the car on the-saleroom and eBay channels; far more than I’ve ever had when advertised before. However, the balance of “car **** voyeurs“ was clearly not a good one!

My old 3200 (sold through Historics just 2 weeks ago) is “Back in the Ditch”! It seems the new owner has rather quickly decided that he’s not a 3200 Guy and has traded her up in part exchange. I do know the dealership concerned - having approached them myself for a possible px sometime ago - and I found them to be quite hard nosed, probably because the car didn’t really fit their stock profile. I expect it’ll be back on the auction circuit soon …I’ll be looking out for it!

In contrast, & despite everything; McGrath have a 93K mile manual 3200 up for £17.5K….
Prices are all over the place for any Maserati, I was pleasantly surprised to get a value without being bombarded with emails for 2 weeks later, and I would like to think it is a little more realistic than most, I had this drop through my inbox at the weekend, a value calculator with Car & Classic. You do need an online account to access, I guess the given value is calculated by what sells on the site.

Optimistic valuations(?)…nearly 50% more than I was able to get through one of the more upmarket auctioneers. But, it’s a way of pulling in business to C&C I suppose!

You may have got 50% more on a different day. Prices at Historics were generally low that day, with most not reaching their estimates and plenty of deals being done cheaply in the hours after the hammer fell.
I also think, as mentioned before, that returning the car to standard colour spec would have helped as would have given it a more ”original and unmolested” vibe.
It‘ll be interesting to see if/when the car is re advertised, so do please put up a link if you come across it in due course.

Interestingly, there's an Autofficina invoice for a diagnostic check and errors delete only days after the sale. Enough to put off the new buyer?

Well observed. No doubt a point of enquiry for anyone interested in bidding, and they may want to note:

The early pre OBD2 (FIAT 3 Pin) diagnostic system on these is a bit eccentric with many separate ECUs for the different systems on the car. The Maserati SD2 is the only way to check everything. Each ECU has to be checked separately, unlike a modern system with a single OBD2 port. You have to take the car to a main dealer / independent and pay for an SD2 diagnostic test.

These cars are now getting old (25 years old in this case) with age related decay in their electrical systems. I fixed quite a few such issues …
