Not entirely obvious, but a series 2 petrol?
Yes, 2a with the petrol. It’s an amazingly quiet engine, but I suppose it should be. Sold it to Germany for £6k just before they went silly money as I was broke.

Have a hankering for an old Landie, I know of a SIII SWB which has been fitted with the 2.6 straight 6, with a Westlake head from the Rover 110 and overdrive which is a lovely balance of grunt and pace, the current owner has always given me first refusal but every time I ask he's not ready to sell - fingers crossed one day

That engine was an option. It’s an IOE 100021

It's a great engine lots of torque and generates nice power once the head is flowed - it won't rev though. it was fitted to all the 6 Pot P4 Rovers in 90, 100 & 110 BHP spec, the latter being the Westlake head which could also take twin or triple carbs with the right manifold.

Only issue is with the standard diff it tends to break half shafts, the uprated Salisbury diff that was an option helps address this issue

Good grief! How have I got to this age and never seen the head off an IOE before? What a weird setup...

It makes a bit more sense when you look at it as a development of early IOE engines when the exhaust was cam operated but the inlet purely worked on suction from the engine.

Maybe my friend (Matt) is a 'young fogey' then. He will be looking for GranCabrio later this year to replace Range Rover SVR so I am "helping"

yep, I get that, I thought it was only really used in agricultural stuff, water pumps and the likes. I hadn’t realised it was an efficient engine for cars.

It’s a bit like the two-stroke diesels! They are daft but blinking efficient! Loads on big American trucks, trains and the likes.

Rolls Royces used IOE too. I think the advantage is you can get big valves in a small bore.
