4200 transmission whine

Hi all,
I’ve just bought a 25000 k 4200 manual to replace my much loved 3200 ,which was incinerated in a bushfire in March. I am loving the 4200 ,but am intrigued by a slight transmission whine in 5th and 6th gears . Is this normal? Is it something I should worry about?

Does it come at higher revs, say in 5th gear, when you accelerate from maybe 60-90.
Or all the time.

I’d check the gearbox oil filter and level as soon as possible.
A lot of time the filter is “over looked” at service time as it is a pain to do.

I have experienced wine from the diff when the car has been sat for a while and you immediately put it on full lock. This mainly occurs in colder weather.

Changing, checking the level and putting in the correct grade and level of oil fixes this.

Did this ever get resolved. Mine has a whine in 5th gear, when accelerating hard from 60 up over.
Spoke to Zep about it at length on the TTP tour.. He said he had microphone and sensors connected to try and find the issue with his but it was all good.
Never new about it for a year, hasn’t got any worse in the last year ot any different over the 1200 mile trip.

Mine has more of a whirr, not so much a differential whine. It's always done it as far as I can remember. It was the same even after my trans-axle was changed 30k miles ago because the MoT tester destroyed the limited slip differential.

Dave, did you notice if it was a similar noise to yours when we went to Panini?

It’s hard to describe Rick, if I hadn’t been told about it, I would never have known the difference as generally I only open the taps 2-4th, 5,6th more for pootling along, is it a whine, a whirr, just seems to change tone.
Can’t say I can remember yours making a noise.

Yes, I had a total paranoia trip over it on mine, chassis microphones strapped to all different bits. Tried several other cars, they all did it to, some were slightly worse, lower revs in high gears I found. Even the Strad does it a bit when cold.

Which makes sense, as mine is in 5th, accelerating from 60, low revs, would say 2500 through to 4500; ish.....
