4200 Track Day

Yes, I know a 4200 is not the optimal track car, but given the choice between my Cambiocorsa Coupe and A4 for track day with friends, the choice was obvious.
Had over 150 miles of track time, about 130mph on the straightaway with a little margin for more as I get braver. Tires complaining much in the sweeping turns as I tried my best to chase down the nimble Supra ahead of me. Had my phone set up as a camera rig, so cockpit video to follow once uploaded.

Bottom line: though she may not be the fastest, she sure is fun to push ******* a challenging course. And, as expected, a great conversation starter.

Driven a few 4200's on track and they are fun......The CC gearbox makes sense on track. For me a track day isn't about if you are the fastest but having as much fun as possible and exploring your own cars performance and limits safely.....You can have fun in any car on track and sounds like you had loads of fun. Look forward to seeing the recording.

The right tyres make all the difference on the track (as well as the road) as they are heavy cars but so much fun. Well done.

On what tyres did you track?

Nothing purchased specifically for track day, just my daily driver Falken all season Pro G5s. Given the weather here, the window for driving with summer tires is laughably small. Perhaps someday I’ll purchase a second set of wheels and tires for track day and actually catch that Supra.
Do you run a dedicated set or your daily set?

Mine is not daily driven, plus i live in a warm climate, so i do have the pzero corsas that stick amazing on tarmac, plus they do have stiff sidewalls, making steering very, very accurate.
On the other hand, there is a lot of incline on your video, so i believe it is normal the fatigue in brakes and tyres.Lovely shot and nice, difficult and green track.

The “flappy paddle gearbox”, as it was so derisively described on Top Gear, quickly became second nature. I love being able to keep both hands on the wheel and have control of the gears at the same time.

I had absent-mindedly left the MSP on, which definitely hampered my acceleration in the more challenging turn exits. Once on the track I wasn’t brave enough to disengage and give it a go, having not rehearsed without it before. Will spin around local windy roads without MSP first to see how it feels.

I had an abs fault for about four months, and abs plus esp were off all the time. What i realised driving the car without electronics is that it has massive more traction with the electronics disabled. You will be surprised. Of course it is dangerous in an emergency.

The MSP does get in the way on the track and really twisty bits, particularly hairpins, better in those to try and hold it in second and use the bottom end out of the bend as first will just spin up on you and if using the MSP it will just bog down for an age!

Honestly, I thought it sounded like there was something wrong with your clutch. I had to re-read the thread to realise it wasn't a manual clutch that you were slipping. (They are a tight pedal box with three pedals, its easily done !!) I guess that's the MSP ?
I almost never drive my manual ( lol !) without disabling the MSP. I find it extremely intrusive personally...Knackered tyres, and ABS wont let you pull up at the lights without a hissy fit ! Not that MSP disables ABS, mores the pity ! :(

Chalk it up to lack of experience on my part. Hadn’t driven it this hard before and had no idea of the intrusiveness of the MSP. It gummed up the works at critical times like the hard acceleration out of the steep/tight downhill turns, where I’d be set to pass and then had full seconds of no power. Next time I’ll give it a spin without. Let’s just hope the “spin” remains a term of art and not an accurate physical description.

:D Yeah- When I first owned the car, I complained to McGrath Maserati, (a well known indy of some repute here in the UK) that there was something wrong with car 'cos it kept 'cutting out ! '
They said they'd "look into it"..!
( Im pretty sure they were just being polite about my ignorance ! )

More fun than should be legal.

I did my setup two days prior and it all worked out.

RAM windshield suction mount for phone
10’ USB cord taped down and routed up the passenger A pillar
Kiwi3 OBD transmitter (provided data for overlays)

Phone apps. There are two popular ones: Harry’s Lap Timer and TrackAddict. I tried TrackAddict for this one, will try Harry’s next time.

All of the data overlays are automatic, and I could even choose just one lap to export, and which data to overlay on the export. Quite reasonably priced given the power of the app!

Saw a similar setup online where the driver added an iPhone set of headphones for a mic, with foam wrapped around it to dampen the wind noise. May try that next time as well.

New brake pads and rotors scheduled for next Tuesday.
