4200 to 3200

It wont go into limp mode, but yours is sticking at a certain point, hence revving at 2000.

I did have a similar issue with my 3200 that Mike Roberts sorted out for me and that was the plenum gasket had been sucked inwards so I had an air leak in the system....more air = more revs. It took him a day to find it, but cost nothing to fix, the screws had fallen out and were sitting in the V of the block.

Speak to Luuk. What I would do is send your old unit back to him, just for checking along with your old pedal pot then he will check it for you and send you back the new bits to fit, piece of cake, you can do it yourself.

Take it to an indie and its £70 just to look at it and probably another £70 to fit the parts.

I'd echo Matt's comments - that financially there wouldn't be much benefit. There is increasingly little difference between 3200 and 4200 prices, with 3200 prices stable (good ones increasing?) and 4200 ones still dropping.

The only 'saving' would be going for a high mileage early 3200....but two things here 1) If you don't currently want the cash tied up your 4200, then you possibly don't want to be allocating cash to maintain any Maserati, and 2) Although in theory you'd be less precious, the reality is that you'd feel exactly the same! You also know your car and its history, so probably less expenditure risk.

Re 4200 vs 3200 and manual vs auto, I tested both manual and auto 3200s and far preferred the manual. Then, after selling my first 3200 I test drove a 4200 but still preferred the 3200 - and I also far prefer the 3200 looks. So, my second Maser purchase was a late model (manual) 3200....and very reliable it's been too :) . I'd replace it for a Gransport, but not a 'normal' 4200. ;)

i found the auto better on the 3200.....its better as the engine seems to work with it.....manual very stiff and more problems like endfloat...

Thats exactly what I found, auto works surprisingly well with the turbo engine, the manual is clunky and the clutch is a nightmare to get used to, great for blasting though.

I've perhaps been lucky that both my 3200s had very recent clutches (just before and just after I purchased respectively), and I've always found the clutch fine. Maybe just that coming from TVRs, I wasnt used to sophistication anyway!

i had to have an auto...just found it better for me....esp being in london....heard stories of getting biting point right or you blow the clutch and scared me that and endfloat....

the auto goes with the turbos...and i always saw it as a GT like bentley and db9 so auto i thought would sell better....

There was nowhere to store a pipe and no matching smoking jacket with the auto, so it was only part of the necessary package ;) . Ho ho, each to their own!

My 4200 has to sit out on the road. I don't like it, but it's not caused me any problems in the 2 years I've been living where I am (touch wood). Not sure a 3200 would be quite so tolerant.

mine tucked up in the garage with about 3inches of space around it, a bit tight but I know it's safe.

fair points one and all! it's true, whether I end up with a 3200, Ghibli or stick with the 4200 I'm gonna be precious.. as long as I have a Maz I'll be ok..

Now you're talking Dem....

I love the 3200 but I think once you've had a 4200 it would be hard to go back to the older car....

you cant do it, you get used to reliability then you go into spending a fortune to own a similar car

3200, GS or 4200, GS seems to be the pattern, and when GT drops to under 40k then that.......

Why not just look for a lockup near to your new place, if you are not using it for a daily comute it would not be a problem? would it ? only a thought
