Yeah, so screw purchase value for a moment. I over paid for mine...And ?
The point here is that if you want a manual, you're screwed after the facelift 4200 ceased production. The choices are fewer and further between... Which makes them less desirable as I see it.
Shrugs and starts looking at German sports cars...
Your right, most of the super car manufacturers are going this way now with no option!! So you only really have AM or Porsche as an option (and maybe some others) these days. Sounds like you are thinking of moving on??

Manuals currently pretty much a similar price to cc, but they might move. Only thing holding it back is the GS which is considered a better car overall.
Yep! GS has always been considered the better of the two. They are two different cars as the face-lift was sold along side the GS. I remember Hammond test driving the GS and loved it, at the end Clarkson said "But does it come with a proper gearbox?"

It is what it is....Clarkson's propensity to eschew his troglodyte heritage is nothing new.
I really do think he just misses the point because he's h3ll bent on being "funny". And that point is the appearance of the type of "aspirational" technology that was being shoehorned into road cars from racing....
Maserati reached for the ultimate in an attempt to offer its buyers that X factor. Skyhook. F1 gearbox technology. Neither very good imo. ( I should be careful here as I have no experience of Maserati's FI box but of a well known German brand- which was all the intro I needed to understand I hated it because it was clumsy, slow and un-involving) Both areas of development that have improved. The way Maserati has been managed as a marque since, it has continued to see a decline in profile, not that I find it easy to put my finger on what that profile is/was. Im not sure it was ever as simple as "race to road" though..
Whilst the cars have perhaps become better technically, they are also all much of a muchness ....
This is the shame of it...

If you watch enough TG you willbsee that they praise/slate a car, then low and behold they have a opposite opinion a few years later when they review the same again.

Prices for good low mileage cars will always be solid as that is what collectors look for. Look at E39 M5 prices to see just how much they have appreciated in the last five years. All M cars will go up in value esp the low milers minters. The E6x M5/M6 cars will also follow that trend so buy now and expect it to be worth at least double in five to ten years.

I think this 4200 was amazing value but then again look at the prices of 996 Carreras from the same year with higher miles. Same ballpark figures and also Jag XKR's they are half the price of the 4200 no point comparing them to any others as these were the rivals back in the day.

How's the AM coming along mate ?
Ed and Voicey have nearly done it all. Just front brake hoses left to do tomorrow and hopefully will collect tomorrow. Gearbox selector issue is all fixed and gearbox back in. Looking forward to spending some time in it.

It was bought and inspected then agreed some issues would be fixed that were found. A kind of post purchase inspection and reversed deal but should work out OK in the end.

A bolt had sheared off the gear selector mechanism on the top of the gearbox meaning the selector bar could have popped off at any point leaving no ability to change gear.

Meant gearbox out, fix and then gearbox back in again. Few other issues but mainly consumables. Will be in fine fettle after all this.

I think we have to accept that first and foremost Clarkson and his buddies are entertainers, and if some serious automotive journalism creeps in along the way then that's a bonus. I actually like the guy, but can never take him too seriously.

Top Gear like the Grand Tour are an entertainment program. I did filming for the Tour in Ullapool last year for Jeremy's birthday sketch, being the last 10 minutes of the program. I had the white QV. I had met them before very briefly. This time we spent about 5 hours with the filming. He was in fact a really nice very friendly knowledgeable man. He was lovely too everyone and chatted and joked with us all.

I was in the audience at Dunsfold a few years ago for an episode of TG, and that's exactly how he came across then. He was also a very professional presenter who worked well with the crew.
