I've put new batteries in my "spare" key but it refuses to operate the central locking/alarm, tried the obvious battery reset to no avail, any ideas/suggestions on how to solve the problem, or is the key b*ggered?

Can't say if it's b*ll*xed but if you need a new one Graypaul quoted the best part of £100 for a new one for my 3200. I only asked because I don't have a spare -apart from the red one.

When you open up the key Miket, test the little microswitch that the button operates underneath in the circuit board , mine recently just caved in within hours of collecting the car from Marranello's after Autoglass had had it , fortunately i had a spare donor key that i managed to get from a salvage yard sometime ago ,
My son in law works as an electronics engineer and managed in all of 5 minutes at work to remove the old switch and put in the donor one saved me a fortune and the hassle of buying a new key and getting it programmed if you can buy a donor key from ebay they are on there quite often he'll be happy to repeat the process for a fiver or tenner i was really surprised at hour quick he did it easy when you have the right equipment i suppose

regards loz

Tested the switch all ok, when I press the button on the spare key before pressing the main key it prevents that operating, so I think it is transmitting but is out of synch with the alarm, I've tried pressing at various positions with key in the ignition, with engine running, in both doors whilst locking/unlocking, hoping to resynchronise it with no success, any other thoughts anybody?

My main key is still functioning perfectly, operating the alarm and central locking, this only came to light because I was leaving the car for an MOT so I left the garage with my spare key!

I assume you've thought about getting it reprogrammed as all else seems to have failed.

Miket I have to agree with Alfamaserman, if the main key works then the spare will need programming. Maybe it never worked?????? When my wife bought her Smart Car brand new from Mercedes, her spare key refused to work and Mercedes had to re program it

I know this is too simple but are you sure the new batteries are not stale. Worth a try to change them again.

Been there done that with the batteries, am about to experiment after reading reset procedures for a few vehicles, but will not be trying the VW method as I have work in the morning!!!
Will report back if I have any success..................
