Did u have larini cats + x pipe + standard boxes, and find it too quiet?
 
Larini cats + standard x pipe + standard rear boxes = too quiet.
Larini cats + standard x pipe + Tubi rears = too loud. So I’m adding silencing to rear Tubis
 
Sounds like Goldy locks but with exhausts :)

I think your problem is the standard x pipe. An unsilenced one will unleash the sound...

On mine I had 200 cell 5 inch diameter sports cats, unsilenced x pipe, standard GS boxes valves open = 100db stationary and ear shattering under load.

I set up a valve controller to control the rear boxes and with the valves closed there was no drone at all which made it good for long distances, I drove it all the way to Amalfi and back.

FWIW all stock bar an X-Pipe. Cold start enough to turn a head or two, warm start nothing to write home about. Get the odd pop and bang when off the throttle which sounds quite nice when going through country lanes etc. Loud enough not to be intrusive at speed. Only thing I don't know is how it sounds to passers by other than being revved when stationary which seems sufficient and in keeping with the car.

So I guess the combo you haven't tried is larini cats + larini X pipe + standard back boxes... which is what I'll have if I put my standard back boxes, back on... which I think I'll try next.
If I'm happy, I might just have Jaren GS remote valve operated boxes for sale.... watch this space....
 
Fwiw, my car has the US spec / Euro4 gransport exhaust (so primary cats in the exhaust manifold) and is stock (Incl. the x pipe) except for the Fiammenghi replacement part of the squashed bit /secondary cats. Noise level increased quite a bit whout being too much, with the added advantage that the engine seems quite a bit more responsive.

I will be interested to know how you like it but suspect it will still be muted. The Larini cats make a massive difference in responsiveness which is more noticeable with a manual gearbox as it revs a lot more quickly, I just need to find a happy medium between standard and Tubi rear boxes with the sports cats fitted.
so I’m perforating the inner of the Tubi’s before repacking with steel wool then glass fibre. Hopefully this will be somewhere between Gransport and Tubi.

However. There is a significant uplift in noise level... which I certainly was not expecting....
I now feel the need to manually close the valves on the Jaren GS boxes all the time. And it's still loud.
So... I'm considering switching back to standard 4200 back boxes, to see how that combo sounds, with x pipe and sports cats. Will see how that sounds and report back, watch this space

X pipe and mufflers make the exhaust sound loud. You could fit H-pipe instead, or the original midsection with the mufflers.

I did however purchase a pair of euro front pipes, which I've gutted, the value of the scrap bags of catalyst material paid for the purchase price of the used pipes. This was about 6 years ago. Like you the plan was to replace the secondary cats with sports cats, which I haven't progressed with.
Probably because changing the rear boxes was enough for noise levels.
The 42/GS revs so quickly, I'm sceptical whether changing the squished pipes actually makes a measurable difference. Because the pipe that is squished is of a greater diameter, the actual restriction isn't as much as those selling replacements make out.
One thing for sure, it is easy, in my view Hypic Prompt, to make it too loud!

Why the catalyst material paid?
 
Hi everyone. Long time no post, I sold my 4200 almost 10 years ago but I still remember the amazing sound.
It had the original euro headers and cats, the rest was all Larini, x pipe, the long pipes all the way to the back and the valved mufflers(I always kept the valves open).

Here is a video of it on a track day
