4200 Dyno Run

Having spent quite a bit of capital outlay as well as sweat equity getting my little black Coupe sorted, my OCD engineering side yearned for numerical proof that it was all worthwhile.

Track days have given quite a bit of evidence of how far she has come from the mess she was when purchased two years go April.

A little troll repellent is in order before going any further, having read through several other dyno related posts here and on ML:
  • I have no “before” dyno run. I know that. Didn’t think of it two years ago.
  • I know that estimating drivetrain losses is an inexact science, to be kind

Bottom line: 360 hp at the wheel. Several runs performed, all of them consistent with less than 1% difference between runs

While I don’t have an engineering error proof estimate of precise drivetrain losses, experience dictates a range of 14-18%, yielding 419-439 bhp as an approximation. Using 420 as a conservative and easily remembered value, 30 above stock… seems quite reasonable.

Power related mods include:
  • gutted primary cats (they were blown when I purchased the car)
  • replaced secondary cats with Larini sport cats
  • x-pipe
  • FD ECM set to a 93 octane tune (yes, now I wish I had a race fuel tune in there too)
  • replaced the air cleaner with a Coupe’ Trofeo style silicone hose and cone filter. No, I don’t really think this gives more power, but I wanted to get a few special people spun up a bit.

Does anyone else have Coupe’, Spyder, GS dyno runs to share and compare?

Certainly sounds like you have a strong donkey in that one. I have similar “I’d like to know” moments. I am sure it will happen at some point.

I was thinking just this the other day, I would like to see what mine has just out of interest. Its the first car I've had in about 20 years that I haven't dyno'd, due to not really doing power upgrades. (yet lol)

Might get a run booked in...

Quite the thread there! Hadn’t spotted it earlier due being a non English speaker. You know… an American. Had never heard a dynamometer referred to as a rolling road. There you go again, calling it precisely what it is.

Surprised at the multiple results over 400whp for a 390bhp engine. Is it standard practice to display the results with a correction for transmission loss on that side of the pond?

Also lots of unresolved questions about the benefits of racing fuel, spurred by the video posted in that same thread. Seems like an enjoyable experiment to undertake. Dyno run on pump gas, run through a full tank of racing fuel while driving hard, and dyno run again to see if the car adapts timing and fuel mixture settings to take advantage of the additional fuel burn time available.

Yes, here they will measure transmission losses on the run down to give a figure at the flywheel, not an exact science and does introduce variability, as does simply estimating the losses.

As for the timing, I’m not quite so sure, I think the knock sensing is on done on a shorter timescale and so benefits of running a whole tank of 98 Ron before a run wouldn’t be that noticeable. Probably just fill it up and do the run.

Track day today. Experimented by using the racing fuel at the track. No difference whatsoever even after hours of consecutive laps. Logged about 200 plus track miles.
So I don’t think the computer will advance the timing past a certain point corresponding to about 93 octane (US) but will retard if it senses pinging.
The good news… took over a second off my best lap time, possibly due to the few hp added by the ECM.

Have you any suspension mods more suitable for track usage.
200 miles is going some, brakes okay?

Yes and yes!

For the suspension, both front and rear sway bars from Formula Dynamics, as well as wheel spacers. I put them all on at the same time, so I can't attest to any differences specific to the wheel spacers... but they sure do look good. No change to the Skyhook.

200 miles is a lot. Brakes are going to need an inspection - the track I go to (Pacific Raceways Road Course) has some areas of very hard braking required, including a near 140mph straightaway into a 70mph turn. Brakes were replaced last fall, so should still have some life left in the pads, but will definitely check before the next track day.

I absolutely love how solid this car feels on the track. Even on hot days, she takes it all in stride... almost like it was built to be pushed like this.

So you have kept the stock springs with the FD sway bars?
Big difference?

Huge difference in handling. Plus, replacing the sway bars also meant replacing the bushings, which were getting a little old already.

Sway bar replacement is a little labor intensive on a Coupe’, but seriously improved cornering in every type of turn on the twisty track I go to. The car just feels tighter and more predictable.

Regarding the springs, I was hesitant to lower the car any more as I do drive it around town and am already challenged with most speed bumps.

Thinking of diving in with some upgrades?

I've actually got both, the springs and sway bars, but haven't got around to fitting them with one thing or other, then covid.
