Keep an eye on those FD tie rods. After 10k miles mine were completely destroyed, rose joint smashed to bits internally and the rod itself was bent (both sides). Another forumer had his fail within 2k miles...

I think they are more suited to track use with nice smooth tarmac rather than pitted/pot holed regular roads.

The stock SFK end bush lasts circa 20k miles and costs a fraction, while the stock rod can actually take the load

Beat me to it...! :p

Ok

thanks for the advice - I’ll make sure keep my eye on them.
What were the originals like that you removed...?
It'd be worth keeping them and servicing the bearings. Keep the rubber boots as these are N/A - AFAIK...

originals are new on pattern lower control arms. I will be keeping them for future use if needed.

Ok thanks for the information - I've made a note of it along with all the other more cost effective alternative sources of spares.

I plan to pick up the old control arms when the car is finished and see what (if anything) can be done with them - depends how worn the ball joints are. If they are down to metal against metal then there won't be much; if not then perhaps inject the joints plus new bushes and bearing in the tie rod. I think I already bought some from Hills along with the reverse gear yoke.

Pulling all the info together into one place is a great idea. Could you post the compiled result? Would make an excellent “pinned post” reference.

The traditional place for alternative / cheap parts for the different Coupe cars is the Alternative Parts thread. It has a huge number of alternative reference parts and it would be best added here.

Ok, it’s just notes in my phone at present but I’ll turn it into a document and add comments against parts I’ve purchased. The rest is information I gleaned by working my way through a thread just after I bought the car.

Going back to the original topic of upper rear control arms for 4200. I’ve attached a picture of the used arms after I had them cleaned - looking good as new now compared to when they arrived. They had lots of surface oxidation and looked like they had been well used - pity I didn’t take picture of the before. They’ll head off for injection of ball joints later today.

Thanks for the tip; I've checked and there is no obvious sign of any cracking. They were tagged as from a 3200 and have what appears to be a casting date mark of 99 so have clearly been around for a while. After cleaning can see some evidence of surface pitting but nothing drastic and the rubber bushes don't look too bad other than rubber is pretty hard but I'm replacing them so not a problem. Boots are in good condition and have probably been replaced some point.

Check for cracking at the seem on the bushes.
Upper rears are very prone to this.
watching with interest. Now your upper rears are clean enough to bring indoors get a good look on the inner faces of the attachment points.
thinking about starting the epic odyssey to get my 3200 back on the road. So far only one of 7 'bones was replaced.

From previous discussion, the arms underwent an update during 4200/GS production lifetime I believe. Added material, ( thicker around the flanbloc bushes) and what appears to be a stress nub strategically placed to negate stress notch perhaps...?
Good luck. Hope it works out for you. I still think Id have just bought new in your position as you are saddled with cleaning and flanbloc removal/installation anyway..,,but hey, I havent seen your bank balance. I imagine its taken a beating recently...!!
