Hi all,

I’m planning an oil change soon and I noticed on some forums it mentions the engine on GTS MC Shift is a dry sump and needs specific oil filter.

I called local Maserati dealer ( In NZ ) and they mentioned all are wet sump.

Could someone confirm or is there a way I could tell myself ?
What would be the correct part number ?

Wet. I think. Good to see another member in same hemisphere!

Thanks for confirming , on maserati life there are threads which indicate MC shift variant has dry sump .not sure if it’s US specific or not .

And same ! Where in southern part of this earth are you in ? I’m in Wellington -NZ

At least up until the era of the 4200/QP5 models, Maserati dry sump engines had red rocker covers and the wet sump engines had blue rocker covers, but I don't know if that is still the case. If yours are blue, I suspect it has a wet sump.

It is definitely wet, there are some tricky bits in the Strad engine to make it a pseudo dry sump, but it’s still wet in reality.

I'm sure it's wet

What does the oil level check process in the manual say?

I have a 4.7 MC-Shift - and although it has red cam covers I'm sure its a wet sump engine. (think I read it in the owners manual). The manual describes checking the oil a few mins after you turn off the engine, as you would with a wet sump.

I believe all automatics and 4.7's are wet sump.
Makes the 42/GS that bit more special with a proper dry sump system.

I wasn't aware of the Maserati blue and red cam cover thing, but this must cause much confusion as obviously its not the case anymore.
In fact, that might explain why I found my car was overfull by a litre after a recent service at a Maserati Specialist. I assume whoever checked it , done it with the engine running like you would on a dry sump engine ....

And the QP Duo-Selects. They are dry sump. I do not know of any other 4door saloon which features dry sump engines.
