Thanks for all the replies. I am now in the market for 4.7 MC shift. But ready though the blogs I can see problems with variators. Is at a major problem with most Gran Turismo and what sort of cost.

Great choice...I have a 4.7 MC Shift and love every minute of it!

Variators were only an issue on early models with engine numbers upto 148697.
I believe 2010 models and newer had the issue rectified and some of the earlier models have since had the work done under warranty or by independents so worth looking into the history of any particular vehicle you’re looking at.
Approximate cost can be in the region of £3k depending on where it’s done.

Hope that helps

Go with the 4.7.....you won't regret it! By the way have you tried 'Son Prestige' in Nottingham. I got my QP from there 2 years ago and they were first class.

How does one go about getting them for 25k? Cheapest I've seen is 27k so even with a cheeky offer it's unlikely. Or am I just rubbish at negotiating a deal for traders.
How long do you think before the 4.7s start hitting the 20K mark?

Well - a guy on AT is selling a 2011 30k miles well maintained 4.7MC shift, with a 3 year after market warranty (expires summer 2022), black on black, full main dealer history and 2 owners... he told me he’d let it go for £28k.
I think it’s incredible value but something tells me this will be worth a lot less in 12months. Especially if Brexit is a S@@T show.
Unreal!

It's crazy. What's the thing with a 'race to the bottom', it's nuts.
I'm pretty sure that at the £20k point, a lot of people won't be able to properly maintain these cars.
There aren't that many around, so if the worst does come to the worst, I can see a high rate of attrition and/or 'bodging'.
I love my GTS and maintain it properly, there aren't many cars around that offer equivalent attributes are there?
If I sold it, I'd probably replace with a 2 seat Strad'.

Totally agree with you regarding the maintenance, I think you'll see alot of people attracted to the low prices and get spooked after one bill and move on. Good examples will be hard to find at the low end of the market. It's why I paid a premium for a one owner car, as I've known the guy for years.

I don't mind a higher number of owners if there's evidence of proper care, but sure, if its one owner and they could afford go buy new, then you can pretty much expect they can fund the maintenance.
My wife says says, I buy cars, make them perfect and then sell them, good car friend says the same!

I have limited my buying budget because I don't want to leave myself left short on maintenance.
I wouldn't buy a 4.2 without the variator fix to give me a running start and if it means waiting a year to find the right car so be it. A good 4.7 maybe within budget then.

Just been looking at a 2010 4.7 QP that had engine number 144494. Came as bit of a shock.

This is correct in standard spec, however, there were two separate packs at different times which gave the 4.7 auto the ovals and then when the Sport came out in late 2012 the ovals became standard.
Are they both valved systems or just the ovals?

Interesting, it may have had them replaced already...not sure if you asked?

To be fair, not every engine presents with the issue from experience in the forum but I guess it’s the chance it could develop over time.

They've not been replaced and it's not showing signs that it's an issue at the moment, but...
