3D Number plates

I have seen ads online for 3D number plates. The comments section (its on Facebook) have people saying they don't work on car park ANPRs.. I'm not sure how they don't work, or if its a cunning plan by the makers to make people think they are immune from speed cameras. Anyway, since I saw the ad I have seen several cars with them on. Anyone here got them?

Like these..

I've got the "4d Crystal Plates" which are basically the same as the 3D only raised higher still but with a transparent platform between the letters and the background. The car park in the nearby town actually prints the ticket on entry with the correct number plate every time so I can confirm that it does read them. The "4D Crystal" is perfectly legal and actually makes the number plate easier to read - imagine some mud and/or snow on the front plate. The "Crystal" idea looks stunning at night when the number plate light tends to both seep behind the letters and cast a bit of a shadow at the same time but once again it's even clearer than a regular plate. From my experience, I would suspect that 3D and 4D plates make it easier for cameras.

They'll probably still work with ANPR, The font isn't that different, however ANYTHING non-standard is illegal and its points on the license.
Sales gimmick, and probably invalidate your insurance as being a undeclared modification and therefore dangerous and can result in a fireball explosion

3d gel numbers and letters are fully legal provided they are in the correct font and in black etc. All spacing, display of BS marks and reflective backgrounds also must comply. I see no reason why a camera couldn't read them provided they comply with the legal areas. I know there used to be a honeycomb background that would make a plate ultra-reflective and therefore show as white on a camera with flash however they are not legal!!

A mate of mine parked his Range Rover with 3D plates in Edinburgh Airport car park and the npr camera did not recognize it when he went to check out. This has happened on three different occasions at different car parks with him. Not sure about speed cameras though!

I was just about to call BS on 3D plates not working with ANPR......or is your mate the exception that proves the rule?

I have 3D plates (pressed metal) on my TR6 and my son does on his car and we have never had any problems with ANPR.

It's the camera. My Alfa GT and Rachel's 147 cause all sorts of issues when the barriers at LHR / Gatwick wouldn't raise. On the plus side I seldom get charged at Epping if I take the 147....

They have totally standard plates, BTW

Personally, you understand, don't like the letters on stilts type number plates.
Even if legal, draws the wrong type of attention from the men in blue.
I'm totally guilty in having a slightly smaller front plate, but again not the silly too small 3/4 size, more 7/8 size!
Is there anywhere else in the world that is so lapse on number plate style?

Just about everywhere, I suspect you'll find....

I can concur, the Irish don't have any form of cherished registrations and they have similar constraints on font, size, colour etc. but that doesn't stop me seeing any number of differences. In fact it drives my OC D daughter mad, why can't they all have them the same she screams everytime she sees a different one

No, do you ever see a French, German, Swiss numberplate a different font, style, construction?

Oh you meant lapse! I thought it was a typo and you were railing against not being able to have any plate style you wanted. My apologies!

Apparently in NI there is no legally required font, I see a lot in the South with all sorts of fonts, and Irish ones too. The worst ones I've seen are Irish plated but yellow on the rear, usually from the 'wee three' - Monaghan, Donegal and Fermanagh.

Just googled, wrong, Irish plates have no required font, according to Wikipedia.

"Unlike legal requirements in all other European countries, a standard uniform character font is not required. The rules simply require legible black sans serif characters, no more than 70 mm high and 36 mm wide with a stroke width of 10 mm, on a white reflective background. The result is that a large variety of perfectly legal font styles may be seen, on either pressed aluminium or acrylic plates, both of which are allowed."

Seems like a legit business, even if they lack the etiquette to ask before advertising.
