360 gearbox software in 4200

Does anyone know anyone who does this job properly? And why is it all so cloak and dagger when you hear of someone having it done? Is there some sort of illegality involved? Whenever you hear of it, whoever’s had it says it transforms the car, but it’s always someone’s mate of a mate that did it? Why the big secrecy and why if it’s so great, doesn’t everyone do it?

Its quite rare to have someone who actually knows how to do, your best bet is eric355 from FerrariChat but he isn't cheap.

Is this even possible? There’s been lots of people saying it is but no strong evidence.

There’s so many differences between the two cars/transaxles/etc it would be surprising if it did.

Also standard 360 TCUs is different hardware (cf201). We run cf231s.

Also Eric says the same.

He reprograms 4200 TCUs with the CS firmware but that’s so that it can be installed on 360s, not 4200s. He reckons it won’t work at all on our car.

I heard one example who said they had CS firmware flashed. But when checking further the version string, it matched a version of Gransport firmware.

I think, but don’t know, that whoever did it in the past didn’t just flash the TCU with CS firmware. More likely they changed some parameters to match the CS in the coding. I imagine the reason no-one says who did it is that they don’t want to be inundated with requests.

When I had my GS I was waiting for someone to talk to someone about doing it (not through the forum) but it came to nothing.

We run 201 hardware in the classico like the Ferrari 360.
Actually the first generation Ferrari 360 actually ran an even earlier TCU, the 201 came latter with bigger memory capable of taking the CS firmware, the earlier TCU didn't have enough memory for it.
The original CS firmware was on 231 hardware.
You can swop the hardware TCU around, for an early Ferrari 360 can be fitted with the latter 201 or 231 hardware.

I think this is the case, parameters changed to CS rather than the whole TCU map.
So instead of the FD DBW module fudging the signals, you get the same result through changing some of the original code.

Indeed, although I think that it changes the shift speed beyond the WOT shift speed of the standard software, which is the limit of the DBW module.

That's pretty much what the 599 GTO firmware update on my old GTS did - just sped up the gear changes. And, oh! what a difference it made. There was some discussion that it's impossible blah blah blah but I think the reality was just that Ferrari/Maserati prefer people to not solve problems they would rather deal with by selling you a more expensive car. They'd also probably not like 599 GTO owners to think that their super-fast gearbox is mostly identical to that of a Maserati just with a flash of faster firmware on it.

Delmonte - have you phone around the indies to see if any of them have firmware versions they can update yours with? SportsItalia and AV would be the obvious first ports of call.

I know that Aldous @ AV has been doing a lot of work on all things ECU for a number of years and even more so lately, it would definitely be worth having a conversation with him

They recently went public saying that they have now fully hacked the Ferrari ECUs of that generation

I think the difference is the ECU is well understood (the Bosch has been heavily reversed engineered and documented by many others).

The Saelspeed TCUs not so much I don’t think. :(
