3200 Throttle RESET

The Achilles heal of the 3200 is its 'Drive by Wire' Throttle system.

The pedal throttle pot is Alfa GTV based, but the inlet mounted throttle body is Maserati only. It is based upon a Volvo unit, and David Askew can arrange a refurbished unit if you don't want to folk out the £1600 Maserati.

Over time, the max and minimum values can narrow due to turing on the ignition with your foot on the accelerator pedal and confusing the system. Follow the procedure below to reset:

Closed throttle resetting
1/. Put gear selector/lever in neutral.
2/. Flick accelerator pedal a couple of times with the edge of your shoe to ensure full return is achieved.
3/. Switch ignition 'round as far as MAR.
4/. DO NOT START ENGINE!
5/. Leave all pedals and switches alone for at least 2 minutes.
6/. Switch off ignition.

Full throttle resetting
1/. Put gear selector/lever in neutral.
2/. Switch ignition 'round as far as MAR.
3/. DO NOT START ENGINE!
4/. Gently depress accelerator pedal to full extent of its travel and keep it there for 5 seconds.
5/. Release throttle.
6/. Switch off ignition.

Conaero,
there is an alternative to the refurbishment David Askew is offering and this is the upgrade of the throttle body with contactless potentiometer which is the Achilles heal of the throttlebody. this is an one off upgrade which eliminates the problem altogether. Anyone wanting more info PM me

cheers

throttle parameters are narrowed if full throttle is not used in an on/off ignition cycle i:e a trip. the handbook states that you should start the car with your foot off the pedal. this however will not exclude you from the narrowing of the throttle range. you will find that a town car will need the reset more often as it rarely gets full throttle.
the reset can also be done on sd2 at service interval.

I have to say rob, this is the most irritating thing about the 3200. Once a month it drives like on/off switch I do the reset and its adeferent car. I would love to meet the guy that desided on this strategy and........ ask him why??

Cheers

Dem, full throttle is pedal down maximum air intake
closed throttle is pedal off, throttle closed, no air allowed to pass.

The term 'throttle' comes from a butterfly valve in a tube or venturi, throttle, as in to strangle or restrict air....agreed, full throttle would mean to me full strangle/restriction, but it does not, slang I suppose.

Hope this helps.

Dem, do both, one after the other as completely separate actions. You will be amazed at the result if it's not been done for a while. During my first year of ownership I used to do it every 6 weeks or so. Now i find I don't need to do it for 6 months........strange...........now what was that about using full throttle every time the car is used:eek:

There is another option at the risk of making myself highly unpopular...........SWAP THE 3200 FOR A GRANSPORT.........only joking keep your shirt on

hi bill

know what you mean. here's an excerp from the factory manual which gives a sort of explaination why and also states the official reset procedure.

Guys I have just done the reset a couple of weeks ago and it's much improVed again now. Trouble is you get used to it and it's when someone else drives it and comments that you realise you've just accommodated it for a while.

Also be sure to time the seconds exactly. I didn't the firsttime and it made little difference compared to the second time

you say the pedal throttle pot is Alfa GTV based? Any particular GTV? I saw one down my local breakers the other day and if the throttle pot is the same as mine, i'll get it

I think all. I would not bother with salvage to be honest, just buy it from the dealer for about half the price of the Maserati dealer.
