I doubt the rev counter is fed from anything other than the ecu.
If it’s not working I seriously doubt it’ll be at the oily end. If that was the case the engine wouldn’t run.
I’m guessing it’s somewhere between ecu and the needle.
But surely the ecu picks a signal up from somewhere?

Yes from the crank sensor. But if it’s not picking up that the engine won’t run.
