3200 new clutch

I had a new clutch and flywheel fitted a month ago , went for a good drive over the weekend and the car is now so much more enjoyable and easier to drive in traffic with gear changes seem crisper, I suspect the fact that the clutch was old (60K) and flywheel was blued with some surface cracks that the clutch disc might not have been disengaging cleanly.

Rex ,

that's good to hear , was the old clutch slipping ? Did you go for genuine parts or another source ?

cheers

was it expensive?

Yes, the clutch was part of a package of work including the can belt service, and new back boxes, drop links and a couple of hoses.I purchased the clutch kit a couple of years ago when they were available and cheaper so I thought I would get it fitted as although the clutch was not slipping it was getting very heavy. The flywheel was the shocker, it had some surface cracks so the recommendation was to change it. Eurospares wanted £700 plus vat but I managed to get one for around £260. Labour for the clutch is around £700 depending on what else you have done, I had the spigot bearing and crankshaft oil seal changed as a precaution.

Quite a lot of work at once, the car must have felt transformed after that Rex. Did you stick with standard back boxes?

I had a new clutch fitted and initially it was a light as a feather but over the course of a few weeks, quickly returned to requiring 2 footed operation, strange?

That's a bit depressing , you would hoped it was going to be longer than that !

Is the release fork moving smoothly ? I don't know if it is the same on the 3200 but on an Alfa I had it was binding on it's swivel/bearing.

Indeed, my Alfa GT JTD which is pull clutch does the same thing. Every year I pull the clutch actuator and dribble gear oil down the shaft and lube the top swivel, it makes a bit difference.

Didn't think that this could be the same issue but there is no reason why not.

Yes , same as that ! I think they both use "pull" clutches

That could indicate a worn pedal pivot bush and is cheap to fix.

parts 46-49 would be where I would start to look if still heavy after a clutch change.

Stuart

McGraths fitted some stainless steel back boxes which are just a bit louder than standard boxes but were cheaper and are good quality. I would like to have tried some Tubi boxes but with having to replace the flywheel and then the back boxes I needed to keep the bill under control. I have also fitted new discs and pads myself this year plus a 2nd hand shockabsorber actuator and 2 new rear springs so she has had a fair bit of attention this year, but that's a 3200. However considering its now 14 years old that's not bad for its first clutch, discs and back boxes.

Sounds sensible Rex, being SS they should last as long as the car. I did a similar thing with a pair of boxes from Marios @ Autoshield, albeit straight through pipes so somewhat louder, but way cheaper than Larini or Tubi.
Well done on keeping another 3200 on the road though, there aren't too many left now, they'll soon be attaining classic status and yes, those components have lasted very well for you

Rex, your shock absorber actuator was not repairable?
I would love get a set of ss boxes that looked and sounded like the originals but I guess nobody built them yet
I can't stand the tought of loosing those square outputs in the back.

The actuator was not repairable, the plastic gear was intact, I took the top off to check the wiring connections and they were all ok so I purchased a 2nd hand unit from David Askew. The new silencers sound no different than the standard units inside the car and do not resonate but have twin round pipes, and good value when compared with other makes.

Let's see what can be done.
I just don't like to throw expensive parts in the bin when they can be repaired
Especially in the case of the actuator where its only expensive because it has a Ferrari logo.

I have a contact that makes the SS back boxes. I had mine done about 3 years ago. I think he charged me 600 for the pair. They are very good quality and sound great. I guess if he makes a few the price would come down....

As for the actuator I repair them if anyone is interested.
