3200 GT Power Steering Pump

Went to take the car out to see if it is running ok and when turning the wheel when stationary I get a really nasty vibration through the rack. There is some axial play (end float) in the steering pump and either bubbles or metal in the fluid, I'm guessing I'm going to have to change the pump and see if it fixes it unless anyone has any other ideas?

The small amount of recommissioning isn't quite finished then.

Perhaps a little premature to be advertising it to forum members.

The issue made itself apparent after I placed the advert. It would be relatively easy to hide it from a buyer but I’m not like that.

Both myself and others find it strange that your sole purpose seems to be critical of sellers and traders here. As they say “if you’ve got nothing constructive to say....”

Have you tried bleeding it, turning full lock either direction a few times, possibly, hopefully just air. Check the gators for fluid too, as they can leak there and you won't notice.

Thanks Allan

I’ll have a look in the gators.

I’ve tried bleeding it, no difference.

It was fine before, I’ve done about 50 miles since changing the rack.

There doesn’t seem to be any noise from the pump. But there might be a bit of noise from the tennsioner or idler.

No leaks or fluid loss, I'm sure there's shiny bits in the fluid so I've ordered a new pump. I thought the undertray would be the last thing but fingers crossed this time round.

See it done- see it gone !

Any lingering pangs of regret that my 4200 isnt a 3200 ever shrinks with each twist and turn of your ownership experience....

Good luck with the sale.

They're not all like that. Almost six years with the AC, 14k miles. Only pedal pot, and coolant pipes, that couldn't be classified as wear and tear. Wishbone and leaking rack after I sold her, (second time before anyone asks lol.) It's a bit of a lottery.

I’m sure it’ll be a brilliant car for someone. It drives superbly as you’d expect of the mileage.

I had two cars in a row that were fixer uppers and bought this because I thought it wouldn’t be. It’s creased me over the last six months, kept me awake at night and has probably affected my health. As a consequence I’ll never like it, hence it’s up for sale.

The only time my car had that sort of vibration through the steering rack was when i had a fluid leak and the fluid level dropped too low. is the fluid level ok? is there a kink in one of the fluid hoses?

Fluid level is fine. Can’t find any leaks or a twisted hose.

Will change the pump and see what happens.

Some systems have a filter in the oil tank and if has it could be clogged.

Rex B

It’s a standard ZF reservoir but doesn’t have the screw to hold the filter. It seems to be riveted so no way to remove. The fluid was clean before I changed the rack so hoping it’s ok

Anyway got the pump out. What a mare. Really don’t want to do one of those again. There is a couple of mm of axial play in it so we’ll see what the replacement pump does.

Changed the pump

And it won’t bleed don’t know how air is getting in there. I’ve tried everything I can think of and run out of ideas.

Will let it cool down and try again tomorrow

Bleed now. Don’t know what was going on there.

Changed the belt and cleaned out the reservoir and made sure fluid flows through it ok.

Not convinced it’s better.

May put it on sale or return with someone and get them to sort anything else.
