3200 feels like it’s locked in park....

Evening chaps,

Been a while since I’ve been on. Had the 3200 garaged and SORN for the past 18 months or so, for several reasons, but life has almost now settled to the point that I can give her some attention again.

New battery and some fresh fuel and she’s fired up and idles flat; I’ve missed that beautiful V8 burble....

Couple of issues however..... which id naturally expect based on her being garaged without attention for so long.

Firstly; no throttle response. She’s got a contactless TB but last time she was regularly used, I recall having to frequently reset the throttle so I’m assuming this to be the pedal pot. Strangely, when depressing the accelerator, the idle actually drops slightly, then returns once the foot is lifted. This suggest anything glaringly obvious to any of you?

Secondly; in order to get her out of the garage so I can give her a good clean up, I knocked it into drive hoping it would crawl out under idle revs without any acceleration. She started to crawl, but then abruptly stopped. Same in reverse. It’s an abrupt stop, after about half a foot of free movement, so am assuming it’s not brakes locked on due to her being sat so long - also assuming not the handbrake due to the initial free movement. It’s almost like it’s still engaged in Park, but engages both Drive & Reverse and moves accordingly before promptly stopping. This a familiar symptom to any of you? It won’t free wheel in neutral either, so currently I can’t get it out of the garage to start its thorough clean up prior to it being sent for service and most likely, a new pedal pot.

Sorry for the essay! Your comments as always, appreciated if anyone can shed some ideas on the above?

Cheers

Ben

Possibly handbrake shoe delamination and sticking? Check TB butterflies move freely. I have a spare original bosch PP if you need it for testing, but I'm away for a wee while.

Binding rear brake shoes sounds most likely if the HB has been applied for long periods and has delaminated.

For the idling issue I'd be doing a pedal reset (you must know how to do that by now? if not google it) and then measuring the voltage at the pedal (yellow and white wires) pot to see if it is in tolerance (350-650mV at idle and 3.2V and higher at full throttle).

Handbrake shoe delamination is what this sounds like to me as well... having just had this on my GS, your description sounds almost exactly what I had...

Many thanks chaps- I had considered the HB but was surprised there’d be as much free wheel turn prior to it locking. The handbrake itself doesn’t feel right, so it sounds like the likely answer.

Thanks Allan ref the offer for the PP to test, no rush; there’s plenty to get on with elsewhere with the car.

Yes- more than familiar with the pedal reset, have tried that without any joy but will try and get a signal read to see if in tolerance.

Much obliged chaps - I’ll update when I investigate further, sadly travelling the next few days but will be back to it on my return.

Cheers

Yes check the voltages on the pedal sensor. .35 to 0.65 at idle and 2.9 to 3.7 at full throttle. Also check both white and yellow are exactly the same within 0.015v of each other at idle. TBH after a long layup I would have expected trouble with the throttle body rather than the pedal sensor, but hey who knows. I have never seen a faulty pedal sensor cause a drop in revs, thats an odd one, check the voltages.

Thanks Davy, I’ll try establish at the weekend and see what I can find out.

More concerned about how I’ll get the car out of the rather narrow garage with what appears likely, then hand brake binding. That’ll be fun!

skids/dollies are the answer, if you can get them under, a lot easier if you drove in front first...
