Hello all, I'm looking to buy a rather nice 3200 manual locally. It has a heavy clutch and wondered what the options are for replacing it? Do I stick to original Sachs or try an alternative such as that produced by the Maserati Shed?
Thanks.

I think they are all on the heavy side. They have a fair amount of torque to transfer.

Personally I’d stick with the Sachs.

If the clutch is too heavy then it’ll be putting too much force on the crank potentially causing thrust issues.

Is the original Sachs' one still available? I thought it isn't, and I have replaced mine with Maserati Shed's one.

It feels a lot lighter to my foot. Furthermore, its release bearing is entirely metal, instead of the mainly plastic original one, so it should be durable.

Had a 3200 clutch bearing go bang back in the day. Had a new Sachs one put in and it was lovely and lite...for about a week, then it went heavy again.

Probably hydraulic, I seem to remember one of the techs saying you need to flush the master cylinder after a new clutch, probably some truth in that.

Thanks Enz0, I liked the spec of the Maserati Shed replacement and the fact that the release bearing is metal. How many miles have you done with the new clutch, is it behaving itself? I believe the clutch plate is a new item and not relined which sounds good as well.

I have only done about 700 miles (1200 km) with the new clutch, so I can say nothing about its longevity.

The genuine clutch kits are still available in Australia,so they must be still around in Europe. BTW are you lot still part of Europe or has that changed lately ?

Still part of Europe.....just. UK leaving Europe is more likely through continental drift than by political process! Still, the election will sort this all out- not!
There is a sachs kit available but interested in alternative options. I have a dodgy knee so a lighter clutch would be good.

I have checked supplier of Sachs clutch (Made in Slovakia,in Europe I believe) and they are still available. Mine cost about A$1200 for complete kit.
Dodgy knee kit................a lot more expensive, see your local quack.

Hi! Has anyone had this problem? Just had the clutch replaced with a Maserati Shed kit, i didn't do it myself, but - long story - as before replacement, difficult to get into gear when cold, but it freed up. Now it won't go into gear at all. I've been through and replaced both master and slave cylinders, and get only about 15-20mm movement from the slave. It's adjusted with max pedal movement from the driving seat and system is bled and fluid crystal clear. Any thoughts - really want to get to drive the car again!

Have you checked the rubber Bush that sits between the pedal and the push rod?

No idea why the Apple Satan machine thinks bush needs a capital letter but here’s photo of Kate.

Make sure you’re looking at the right bush. Marios correctly identified the fault with mine but I kept saying “no it’s not that” as I was looking at the wrong bit.

Just a thought, but when I got a kit from Mike, it comes with instructions to adjust/ adapt the pushrod as his clutch kit is slightly different from OE. If the garage who fitted it wasn't paying attention this might have been missed. Hope this helps. Interested to get your opinion of the new clutch once its working.

Ha! Me again replying to my post! I took out the clutch rubber stop and that gave me a further 22mm of travel on the clutch pedal. Solved the matter apart from quite a long throw. Next time the car is in the garage over the pit i will see if i can fine tune it - or in old fashioned language 'fettle it'.

Also to report that (subject to an MOT) limited driving around the paddock(!!!) suggests a smooth and not too heavy action, certainly the best gearchange i have experienced with the car. Mike was also very helpful sending me another set of instructions as they hadn't been returned with the car.
