3200 Clutch Replacement

Hello friends of Italian craftsmanship :D

I had my first real breakdown with my diva yesterday.
After some stop and go in the city, I had the feeling the clutch behaves differently.
Then after 80km overland drive, I could not shift into gears anymore. I suspected the clutchs' master or slave cylinder but after some pumping of the pedal it got stuck in the pressed position and after pulling it back it got stuck in the released position. Trying to press while engine was running made a metallic sound.
After a short google search I came to this site: https://driven.boards.net/thread/175/maserati-3200-clutch-release-bearing
Here it shows that a weak point of the clutch was the release bearing or better its "ears" that were truly under dimensioned.
The clutch with bearing was last changed at 60.000kms and now it had 23.000kms done (83tkm in total).
The clutch always behaved excellent, so I would not change it.
But for the release bearing I was planning to strengthen the weakpoints like shown on driven.boards.
The pictures shown are not from my clutch but borrowed from the mentioned page.
I ordered SACHS 3151 600 781 for 102€

I was surprised I could not find this issue here on sportsmaserati.

Any suggestions?

Greetings from Vienna!

Mine did that and I posted a detailed thread about it and someone welded up a new bearing so it wouldn’t do it again but that was on the old forum from memory which has been lost at sea with all hands.

Thanks for your replies! That release bearing looks indeed much more trustworthy.
Would anyone know if the thin metal spring is part of the new OEM release bearing or is it possible to order it separately?
From what my ears heard, it won't be there anymore when I open the clutch...

Hi Boomerang_GT good luck finding replacement release bearing. Lot of mechanical effort going through clutch on our manual 3200 and that component looks to be "only just good enough" to do the job.
Problem is that so much work is needed to access the bearing it might feel uneconomic just replacing the bearing. Also known as "while you are in there" syndrome.
Had torn release bearing and excellent local indie did the work. Think it was £700 of labour to do the job. I got lucky and bought used Sachs clutch kit (£250) that was effectively brand new and still had date stamps. Was I really lucky ? my car still has that tinplate release bearing.

Very interested in the clutch bush and will be doing this to my car once it has an MOT again.

So I got a new bearing which price was quite reasonable. Will reweld and improve it.
The clutch is just 20.000km old so I will not change it.
I am just wondering where to get the inner rings that hold the bearing. For similar systems there is a replacement kit available. Just not for ours.
Anyone knows where to get the parts?
Thanks!

Luckily the holding ring for the release bearing was undamaged.
I re-welded mine Russian style, but looks more trustworthy than the part from factory.
The transmission removal was more difficult than I thought. This car just was not built to be repaired...

Car is back on the streets :D
Took me 2 days in total but I took lots of care for the side jobs you do while you’re there.
One thing that gave me a bit of a headache was the tiny spacer that got lost. Costs a fortune and 3 weeks of waiting time. So I made it myself. But I will install it once arrived. Luckily this can be done easily without taking the transmission out again.
The Workshop manual was helpful but contained some errors.
And would anyone who has done the transmission job have a hint on how to best make space to push the plugged cardan shaft out of the transmission? I pushed the engine to the from but still it was hardly possible...
So total costs around 200€ and hopefully the weak bearing will now last longer.
