Caught an ‘E’ and this time pressed the econ&circ buttons to reveal a lottery-winning string: AA E4 F6 F7 F8 F9
Any ideas or pointers?

I have taken to turning the fan off before turning off the car and on again only after starting. Completely subjective but this seems to reduce the frequency of ‘E’s.

If I do get the error then a car re-start generally fixes it.
 
AA is start and end of fault indication cycle
E4 knob sensor data.
F6-9 EEPROM errors

Looks like it's a control unit issue. Suggest doing the aircon restart procedure. Battery disconnect accomplishes this, but should also be possible manually.
