Your results are brilliant, Jon - you’ve plainly turned fat into (heavier) muscle this week, and the figures are all heading in the right direction.

Enjoy the vino - you deserve it - this is a marathon, not a sprint!

The fact that your weight has increased and your body fat has decreased is great news. That’s the holy grail for people like us, as it’s hard work to gain muscle in middle age.

Here goes, chaps!

With a HIGHLY motivational video in the background to keep me going (Anna Tur, Ibiza DJ)
You’ve clearly got the cardio side of it sorted. But you need some bigger weights than those under the TV!

Got these too, but know what you mean - I really need one of those weight machines you see in gyms ...

This is my home gym...I do much more cardio than I do weights, and I know I really ought to do more lifting... I just don’t enjoy it as much.

So are these all actually yours?

C
Haha - no, my wife is responsible for the kettlebells/weights and the spinning cycle. The other equipment we’ve built up over the last 10 years or so, and we had the cellar converted into a gym about 3 years ago ...

That cage is perfect Jon. Just doing the big three of squats, bench press and seated shoulder press you can cover the key muscle groups.

You’ll soon need more disks than I can see in that pic, but it’ll be money well spent.

Lol Ewan - the discs in the pic are from my 13yr old daughter!

There are some very nice home gym set ups revealing themselves here and it’s good to see that the wrappers aren’t on em either.
Keep it up fellas and make the most of those nice workout spaces.

So it begins, Day 1 back in the gym. Walking only. 40mins before the hip kicked in and I called it a day. Comfortable before that.
78050

I’ve got a couple of concerns as I’ve lost 3kg in a couple of weeks. Muscle no doubt, but I suspect a lot is now due to my resting heart rate which has exploded higher.
78051
That’s a lot of extra beats an hour!
78052
Which is a lot of fat burning according to this!
I’m eating well so if I can’t reverse this I’m gonna contact the surgeon to see if my newly installed “turbo” needs dialed back a bit.
Failing that I’m gonna be competition lean In around 4 weeks!!!,

Oh no, Wattie! If it's not one thing it's another.

I'm sure you just need a bit of fine tuning - more like balancing the carburettors than turning down the turbo(!)

3kg does seem like a lot to lose given that you've been eating well whilst convalescing, but then your metabolism has sped up considerably. If you're worried, why not call the surgeons ASAP for reassurance to put your mind at rest?

Back on track this week....

31st October - 85.2kg @ 25.2% body fat
7th November - 85.0kg @ 25.0% body fat
15th November - 84.4kg @ 24.9% body fat
22nd November - 84.7kg @ 24.7% body fat
29th November - 83.9kg @ 24.6% body fat

Overall, this means that in November, I’ve only lost 1.3kg, of which 0.9kg is fat, and 0.4kg is muscle. That’s not a massive difference, but if I look at it over the two months that I’ve been exercising and not drinking (much) I’ve lost a total of 5.1kg, of which 4.3kg is fat and 0.8kg is muscle

1st October - 89.0kg @28% body fat
29th November - 83.9kg @ 24.6% body fat

Plan for December is to maintain the exercise, to drink like a fish, and hopefully be below 85kg on New Years Eve.

Well done!

2lbs of fat is not to be sneezed. Grab 4 packs of butter and you'll have a good idea what it looks like.

I've not been posting my numbers for fear of jinxing it, but might to tomorrow. Suffice to say it's moving in the right direction :)

Absolutely brilliant results, Jon - well done!

At 83.9kg you're in very good shape, and what a difference you've made! I'll bet you've made a difference not only to yourself, but also to those you love.

Great stuff ...

Only?
I think a pat on the back is required.
Enjoy the next month, set your goals and if you carry on like you are a year from now you’ll be where u want to be.

Today marks day 90, and the end of my alcohol-free challenge. I can't really believe that I've actually done it! Last year I made it to day 46 (of my target 28), but I wanted to push myself harder this time around.

My aim was to get below 80kg from my starting weight of 83.3kg, and today I weigh 79.3kg. I also wanted to lower my blood pressure as it was way too high (even on 5mg of lisinopril per day) at 141/95. It's now completely normal, hovering around the 125/85 mark.

I knew I had to get out of the daily drinking rut (in a difficult year) which was affecting my mood, energy and performance levels. I feel I've shown it the door and kicked its a*se on the way out! My life has improved immeasurably ...

So I'll be doing this again, at least once per year: now that I know I can do it, there are no excuses!

Like Jon, I'm going to allow myself a little festive indulgence and be kind to myself (and others around me) ...
