That's pretty surprising. What are you using for these measures?

That's not so surprising given your abstinence.

Well done, though!

Thanks Catman!

I'm using a Tanita Innerscan, and then going to their website for data interpretation ...

Interesting. Do you know the model number? There appear to be several.

So generally these scanners are not that accurate. They're getting better, and should give you a directional indication of reduction or increase. It's pretty important that you get the height, gender and athleticism (if it has that) correct as it will have a significant difference if you told it you're a woman.

How tall are you?

The other thing is you need to have bare feet (but you know that, right?), but wet or dry will also have significant impact (certainly a couple of decimals) I'd check that the settings are correct, but that body fat really does seem 'too' high.

Thanks Catman.

It's a pretty old scanner (BC-543) - at least 10 years old, so maybe I should get a new one if you think the figures don't look right.

I'm 5"10.

I've checked the inputs and I need to update my age - maybe that will make a difference - all other data is correct.

Day 82 off the booze, and I feel like I'm now on the home straight towards my 90 day goal.

No significant weight loss this week (down 0.2kg to 79.5kg), but I thought I'd go into some deeper readings (wish I'd done this at the start for comparison purposes!)

24.3% body fat (boo!) - this needs to be 22% or lower
52.1% water (yay!)
Metabolic age - 49 - (boo! - I'm 47)
Visceral fat level 2 (yay!)

Looks like there's more work to be done ...
I doth my hat Froddy.

I need to 'fess up - I've now set the scales with the correct age, and have realised I made an error with my visceral fat level

Correct data is:

24.9% body fat - not good at all!
51.2% water
metabolic age 50 (OMG!)
Visceral fat level - 10 (OMG!)

Looks like I'll be extending my 90 day challenge to Christmas!

Doesn’t diminish your achievement at all.
That’s cast in stone.

Hmm, so your BMI is a right at the low overweight.
Percentage fat is just above acceptable.
Per the visceral fat rating, from the Tanita website:
'What is the ideal visceral fat rating? The Tanita body composition analyser can track visceral fat in your body. Based on all the available information it gives you a range between 1 and 59. A rating between 1 and 12 indicates that you have a healthy level of visceral fat.'

I don't think you're too far off a sensible set of stats.

8lbs off would see you right IMHO

If you want to invest, some new scales might be worth it, but at best they're still only likely to be indicative not absolutely accurate (At a guess maybe 5% either way, but it is a guess). AFAIK the only way to really measure body fat and visceral fat particularly is a scan.

Are you exercising?

Thanks Wattie and Catman ...

No, I’m not exercising as such, although I’m pretty active with walking the kids to school (1km round trip) and running up and down the stairs of our home many times each day. My Apple Watch suggests I’m burning about 2,600 kCal each day with 6,500 to 10,000 steps.

I should start exercising I think - this is obviously what I need to bring the figures down. I’ll need to be cautious though as my wife already thinks I’m having an affair!!

At your age, and that of many of us on this forum, doing some form of resistance training or weights is important. Testosterone levels drop with age, and muscles wither, so you need to counter this. Also, bigger muscles burn more calories. Of course, dropping fat is great, but don’t forget to work your muscles also.

Yes I think I’ll start today!

I’m very fortunate to have a small gym at home, which I use infrequently, and that’s a bit of an outrage - I need to get back into the habit and make use of what I have.

Quite excited about it now!

At a guess, not a chance. Those things are hugely inaccurate, and that sounds way too high a level. Ball park walking a mile burns 100 calories. Unless you're active during the day in ways your watch is not picking up.....

Very nice home gym Froddy and great set of numbers as well....

I’ve switched to a Sunday weight check, and I also use a Tanita set of scales that gives me an indication of body composition, so will post my latest set of figures tomorrow.

Slightly annoyingly I’ve put on weight this week, but at least my body fat percentage has dropped.

31st October - 85.2kg @ 25.2% body fat 63.7
7th November - 85.0kg @ 25.0% body fat
15th November - 84.4kg @ 24.9% body fat
22nd November - 84.7kg @ 24.7% body fat

Visceral fat for me is scored an 11, and body water is 51.7%…

I’m obviously not going to hit my target of 82.5kg (13 stone) by the end of November, so may need to keep going for a couple of weeks in December. Today however, I’m bored of it, so I’m going to have a Sunday lunch and a glass or two of vino!
