Thanks all,

I have a torn rotator cuff and a possible shoulder fracture!

Have been advised to keep my arm in a sling for the next 24-48 hrs and to take strong painkillers & anti-inflammatories. They then want to re X-Ray me to see if I have a small piece of bone floating around in my shoulder...

Having had two lots of reconstructive shoulder surgery, you have a long road to recovery. :(
Torn rotator cuff is the worse part. A shoulder fracture will heal quite quickly.

Is it your left or right shoulder? And are you left or right handed?

I'm still struggling with my left shoulder after breaking my collarbone last May.
Had loads of physio they say age is the major factor.
Have to get it right before I can get back on a motorcycle for sure.

I fear you may be right Mark, but I’m clinging on to the hope that it’s really just a bad sprain. It’s my left shoulder and I’m right handed...

Same as what I damaged. Trust me, you've had a result.
If it was your right shoulder you would have to learn how to do everything left handed, for a long while.

If you have private medical care, get it done asap before you get too much scar tissue. The pain just gets worse otherwise.
You'll probably need months of physio (private health care also helps), and sad to say, you will be looking at circa 9 months until you get back to normal.

Apparently the shoulder is the most used joint in the body.

Thanks Mark - I’m fortunate in that I do have very good private medical care and I’m booked to see an orthopaedic consultant on Friday....

Yesterday was a pig-out day as I was feeling sorry for myself, and was in pain. This meant I ate cake, repeatedly. Today needs to be better, as otherwise I will be putting weight on, and that would be annoying

Good luck, Jon. Don't revert to eating habits of old just because of a crappy shoulder. It'll be an interesting challenge to work out how to exercise without using it a lot. I can imagine that even when exercising 'remote' parts of the body the shoulder will, as Mark, commented get used a surprising amount for balance etc. A different kind of challenge awaits!

At the risk of gross insensitivity in the face of Jon's woes, yesterday I did my first meaningful exercise for 10 days. 4.5k of rowing in 20:16. I was happy with that. Two 1 min breaks to glug water. Improved technique (thanks, Stevie) certainly helped. Today is a London day, and as I despise the tube with a ferocious passion that means lots of brisk walking. So far 3.2km, 4.6k steps and 35 brisk minutes out of 50 total.

Today the scales started with a 19 for the first time in probably 8 years!!!

Progress is slower than I would like but it is in the right direction. People are commenting that it is noticeable which is great.

Newton, that's superb, mate. Just brilliant. Progress needn't be fast. I'm no expert, but it somehow feels that to improve over a period of months is healthier than to try and shed a chunk of weight too fast.

@JonW , how's that shoulder?

Morning all,

Thanks for asking Adam - I’m still not 100% sure what I’ve done to the shoulder, but have now seen a consultant and had an MRI scan. Hopefully I will get to talk the consultant again today and find out what’s what.

He did some further tests that (although they were painful) indicate that 3 out of 4 of the rotator cuff tendons are still attached and working... he was pulling and twisting my arms all over the place, and apparently if the tendons weren’t attached I wouldn’t feel as much pain and wouldn’t be able to resist such movements.

I still have limited ability to lift my left arm up in the air without using my other arm, and once it is up in the air I can’t apply any resistance to stop it being pushed back down. This means there is one tendon on the top of the shoulder which he thinks I may have damaged, but he wants to check - sometime this is almost stunned for a few days until swelling reduces and it pops free again...

In more positive news, I’ve managed to do an hour’s easy riding on my turbo trainer the last three nights, and I weighed myself this morning and was 13st 5! I’ve also managed to avoid the temptation to have any alcohol, which is bloody remarkable...

Awesome. Progress is about the right level. This is a change for life, not the next couple of weeks. Great stuff!

Forgot this yesterday
198.6 at 14.9% fat
Which is nice but more than I was tail end of last week.

I *think* I managed to avoid temptation last night and this morning so hopefully won't be too bad tomorrow.
