Keep it up Newton and Dan...great work. Any move in the right direction even by 1% is a win. Try not to want too much too quick. It is about long lasting results and changes.

One thing Newton I have done as I'm similar in that I struggle to pass the fridge or kitchen without snacking is replacing the type of snack. I bought a job lot of plain blanched peanuts with raisins and dried apricots from Holland & Barrett. Whenever I feel the need to snack I have a small bowl of these. Not perfect I'm sure but so much better than cakes/biscuits.

I also used to have a biscuit or two with tea at least once a day. Again I have replaced this with nuts, apricots or similar.

I have also stopped eating crisps other than special occasions.

I have only done 3 bikes rides so far and never expected that to help with weight loss. Just wanted to feel a little fitter and sharper.

I am sure the biggest impact as many have said is what you put in to start with. Get that nailed and you are more than halfway there.

Even little things such as sugar in tea/coffee. Ditch it and over time you won't miss it. I think that is key for me to ditch stuff I don't need and I know is not good for me but to replace it so the mind is still happy. It seems to be very much a 50/50 mental as well as physical thing.

Easier and realistically achievable stepping stones and little steps. Over time adds up to so much more.

I have never had a sweet tooth, my weakness is savoury snacks, not crisps and such like but cheese and sliced deli meats, olives and of course savoury pastries...

I am trying to substitute with marginally better things if I can like tinned tomatoes sort of Virgin Mary style... bit of umami, maybe a raw mushroom or a bovril drink.

Well done both! Not sure a bowl of peanuts is better than biscuits. 600kcal per 100g!

Just keep on plodding. There will be good days and bad days.....

Now this is where it gets into areas I don't understand. Is calories bad?

I know saturated fat, sugar, salt are all bad. However some fats are good.

If a small bowl of blanched peanuts/raisins is worse than a cake, biscuits or crisps then I'm barking up the wrong tree. Just need to work out better substitutes as surely cakes, biscuits and crisps can't be good things to eat.

Everything in moderation. An almond finger with my coffee is ok, the whole packet, not so good. **** it.

Never start on Jaffa cakes....one cake often means whole packet! Stupid invention.....the govt need to ban them. I've banned them from myself.

I’m convinced that banning anything is not the answer, and that the real mastery lies in learning moderation. However, there speaks someone who can’t self-moderate and is doing dry January....

Have just finished a fun Sunday afternoon kettle-bell session / watching Man City thrash Huddersfield!

I don’t know why but overhead squats defeated me, and were replaced with goblet squats. I also need to buy a couple more kettlebells, so that I can do stuff with a kettle bell in each hand...

Great work everyone in terms of keeping going - and for those doing Dry January we are now 2/3rds of the way there!

Are calories bad? If you want to lose weight you need to use more calories than you eat. Peanuts (as with most nuts) are really rather high in calories. So if you want to *lose weight* they are not the best snack you could be munching.

If you want to do something else (or you're balancing the calories in the nuts vs other foods and your overall activity) than a bowl of nuts is quite possibly 'better' than cakes, biscuits or other stuff.

*But* a lot of the 'this is bad' has about as much basis in science as 'eat this one simple food to prevent cancer'

As is said above: All things in moderation.....

Having picked up the sickness bug that Alex and Joseph had, I'm guessing I've lost a bit of weight being sick and having the two bobs yesterday.

Although, I think I've probably put on weight eating loads of chocolate today.

Resuts so far...
I think I'll post my starting on 2nd January, my last announced stats and my new stats.

2nd January:
Age: 36
Height: 6'4"
Belly flopped: 51"
Waist: 44"
Weight: 19st 8lbs

12th January:
Age: 36
Height: 6'4"
Belly flopped: 49.5"
Waist: just over 43"
Weight: 19st 5lbs

Today:
Age: 36 - no change
Height: 6'4" - no change
Belly flopped: 48.5" - 2 1/2 inches so far!
Waist: 42.5" - 1 1/2 inches so far!
Weight: 19st 4lbs - 4lbs overall, only 1 this week

Well, I know I ate out 3 times in 3 days so not surprised I haven't lost loads. That said, I'm noticing my muscle mass and definition increase as well as I'm really beasting the exercise and keeping it nicely varied. I'm averaging over an hour a day. I have to say, though, I'm seriously chuffed about the changes in my belly and waistline!
I now have a good short-term goal because I've booked some skiing in March. I want to be under 19st. I also want to go with more than the baseline fitness I've gone with before. Combining 12lbs less weight to fight against compared to the last few times I went skiing and having more fitness, I'm sure I'll appreciate the difference! After that, I want rid of the belly overhang!

Well, after ignoring this thread after my lack of weight loss (not through trying) I am back.

Belt is now back on the smallest setting and Ill do a weigh in after Boxing tonight.

Still no booze, loads of exercise but not been so heavy on the diet but I think the lack of booze is now starting to have an affect.

Looking forward to being proved wrong on the scales tonight :(

Stuck at the 200lb psychological barrier. Still fat % seems to be dropping, and trousers definitely more comfortable. Seen this before and no big deal.

I forgot to weigh myself. Going again tomorrow, I’ll try not to forget this time.
I seem to remember reading somewhere not to weigh yourself after exercise.....its better to be consistent with your weighing timings. Ie around same time before breakfast when you want to measure it.
