Curious here as I'm feeling like a variety of garage based exercises may be good. Is there any fundamental difference between the Tacx (?) that you competent cyclists are using and a gym type static (or even recumbent) bike?

Anyone suggest some weights?

Cheers

Effectively a Tacx is a 'smart trainer' and used with Zwift can be used to replicate the terrain on the course you are riding.
For example if you are doing the Ride London course, and get to Leith Hill there is a 15% incline and the bike will replicate the effort needed to go up said hill, and also the same coming down, and of course at various inclines and er declines... around the course.

Whereas a static bike will mean you just pedal depending on the resistance input.

Well, most of the 'bikes' I've used have programs to vary the resistance (same like cross trainers and treadmills) but other than that, the exercise is the same, yes?

My 2cents worth...

In terms of the quality of the exercise and the amount of calories burned, stress on the heart, etc.. then no, there is no difference at all between a bike hooked up to a smart trainer and a more traditional exercise bike.

There are differences in terms of how much “interaction” or distractions there are whilst using them, which can make them easier to use for longer, and more likely to be used repeatedly, but the fundamentals are identical.

Before I started using my bike and smart trainer with Zwift, I Used to use the spin bike in my home gym, and it could be a bloody hard workout when I wanted it to be, or a gentle warm up when I was doing something else.

For men above a certain age, I think weight training is a must, and free weights is probably the easiest way to do that at home (or in your garage)....

I'd say the whole point is to be able to eat what you want, within reason, by not eating bad stuff all the time. We all need a treat, and if a pair of porky snorkers from Tesco is what'll warm the cockles of your heart from time to time, it would be a sad world if you needed to dodge 'em (Newton the sausage dodger?).

Regarding weights, these Powerblock thingies are great.

Instead of a bench, I used a Swissball. It adds some instability, which is good unless you want to go mental on big weights. It's also really useful for a variety of body-weight exercises, plus it's what I sit on when I'm working from home.

I have a pair of those as well, and think they are ideal for a home gym.

My exercise session tonight was a home made circuits / intervals session.

10 mins spin bike warm-up

4 Circuits of:
10 goblet squats (16kg kettlebell)
10 sit-ups (Bosu)
10 incline row
10 tricep dips (off bench)
10 press ups
10 bicep curl to shoulder press (powerblocks)

Followed by 4 Skierg intervals. 500m, 1 min recovery
Target pace 2:05-2:10 for all 4

Felt like a decent effort, but I probably should have done the Skierg first rather than last, as I was officially pooped!

Nice. Those powerblocks are nice but *how much*!

Mine are quite old (but strangely just as effective as when they were new. No sw updates required and they'll never stop working. I can't remember what I paid, but the fact that they take up no space at all and handle as much exercise as you'll ever need makes them good value in my opinion. Unless you want to be in the business of shaving your body hair and smearing baby oil over yourself and then prancing round in speedos I'd say they do just the job.

After all that, Jon, you realise that I'll be expecting some kind of Dwayne Johnson physique at the driving day in May?

Hhhmmm - I wonder whether there’s a different bloke called Dwayne Johnson who’s much shorter and much fatter than the Rock? There must be one somewhere, right..

This is my lunch!... not remotely healthy, but I don’t give a ****, as it excites me almost as much as a young Kelly Le Brock!

Sad thing is that the enjoyment will probably last longer than it would with Kelly as well, but that’s a topic for a different thread!

This week I have been mostly sat on a sofa with a laptop. I've been sat here from 9am to 1am most days, writing a sales manual, presentation, and all the associated sales paperwork and terms and conditions. My neck aches, my back aches, my eyes ache, and I have a cold! So this morning I went out for a greasy spoon to cheer me up a bit. It'll probably be the only thing I'll eat today as, guess what, I'm back on the sofa typing away.
Got a plane to catch at 18.30 so that'll give me a bit of exercise walking to the gate.

Soon all this hard work will pay off and my new and improved sales force will be out there making money for me and I can go back to what I do best, which is only a few hours of work a week and having plenty of time to focus on fitness and messing about with cars!!

However, on the plus side, still no booze consumed in the last 18 days.
