Newton, don't beat yourself up! It's the long haul that matters. I think we should look at stuff from a week-to-week perspective and longer term. Daily can just get depressing, and I know I can fluctuate by 2kg+ in one day so have to look for overall trends.
I'm pleased that my cough/cold/throat has recovered enough to be commuting on the bike again. now I just need to use that as baseline noise and keep up the other workouts.

I know I'm just annoyed with myself for not resisting enough yesterday, too many temptations!

As I type this Alex is cooking himself a fry up in the kitchen before going into uni!!!!!

We all falter at times which is one reason I get weighed on a weekly basis just did it this morning and I have put a pound on!
Now standing at 12 Stone 11 lbs
I found it easy at first (2 years ago) but it gets progressively more difficult to lose those other pounds when you are near your target weight.
I am constantly being told not to lose any more weight by mates (at 12 stone 10 lbs) for fear of looking gaunt. So am in a quandary, do I stick at 12 stone 10 lbs or twist for 12 stone 3 or 4
Dunno.

I just had an amusing email summary of my December activity from my activity tracker. I use a simple one - Misfit Shine 2 - but it does various different exercises, and is accurate when tracking swimming. Anyway, my summary suggest an average activity+base metabolism of 3400 calories per day last month! However, the amusing bit was the topic of the email: "Do it for the doughnuts!" Followed by the blurb "Whatever your reasons are for hitting the gym, the track, the hills... even your living room floor... we support you. And if you're like us, you're doing it so you can eat what you want, when you want. Because life is all about balance. And donuts. So take a look back at December and give yourself a little self love. Now, let's take on January so you can eat allllll the donuts. Every single one of them. #NOJUDGEMENT"

So I'm not very bothered just yet about strict calorie counting in my food and drink intake, but I've started trying to have healthier and fresher food. That must make a good difference for starters. That's three days running of lots of fresh colourful veg in my meals and sometimes hardly any carbs. Also, tonight's taste bonus was that the fish I defrosted to cook tonight wasn't salmon, as I thought, but rainbow trout.

So today was my kids’ first day back at school, and as a treat for them my wife has made a massive slab of homemade mint chocolate brownie. Now that is all very nice, etc, but it certainly isn’t helping me with my commitment to cut down on snacks and stop eating chocolate...

Have just had a piece, so am about to jump on my bike and do a decent bike ride before bed!

13lb off today frustrating slow down but continuing in the right direction.

Well done!

Don't get frustrated. Just have realistic expectations.
Like I tried to explain up there somewhere that early, big loss isn't fat.
*Now* you're burning fat and a couple of pounds a week is a good target. That's a 7000kcal deficit. 1000kcal per day. That's quite a lot. Much more than that, without additional exercise you're going to start dropping muscle to reduce your base energy requirements and *keep hold* of the fat.

To lose 2lbs of *fat* per day you'd have to eat nothing *and* do something like run a marathon. And if you do that, you won't lose 2lbs of fat.

This is where people start to fail. Push through and be positive. Really good start and as long as you keep going down week on week (not day on day) it's all good!

Newton, that sounds like good progress. Seriously well done! Chris knows more about this stuff than I do, but results won't happen fast, and if you draw even a linear progression from where you are now to where you want to be in 3, 6, 12 months then the rate of change won't be dramatic.

I agree with others that the rate of weight loss at the beginning of a health kick or diet is always somewhat misleading and a bunch of it is down to temporary changes in hydration levels.

I actually tend to find I have a bit of a bounce, so maybe lose 5lbs in the first week, and then regain 1 or 2 the next week before (hopefully) settling down to a steady 2 lbs a week.

I’m trying this time round to weigh myself less often. The temptation is to step on the scales every morning, but I’m not sure it actually helps, or tells you anything useful. So I’m trying to weigh myself no more than twice a week.

Last night, after the brownie incident(!), I jumped on my bike and did a 2hr, 35 mile bike ride. In all honesty that was probably more fuelled by a stressy day at work and wanting to turn my brain off, but it was still enjoyable (until the final ride up the back of Leith Hill, which was a bit too long and steep)!

According to Strava that was c.1100 calories burned through exercise, so it must help...

Well today is probably going to be the most physically active so far this year which will no doubt help. I'm in this for the long run indeed so I'm not in danger of throwing it away yet but there is a desire to crack that first stone quickly...

Leith Hill on Zwift is a lot easier than in reality. At least on Zwift you can't fall off for doing 1mph up a very steep hill.

That was almost me on RL2018. Hence I walked a bit of Leith. Didn't help having to stop because of other people falling off, probably just like that!

Lol, it was carnage wasn’t it!!! Have you entered the ballot for this year ?

It was. I have entered the ballot, I have also entered an Amstel team as well, which apparently is a better way of getting in. You just need 4 of you. Which shouldn't be difficult to get 3 others who want in. Especially as there is free beer at the end!
