Jon - I like that rowing regime. I failed to do any at all today, but now have that lined up for tomorrow.

On the upside, I walked 6.2km and apparently exactly 60 minutes of that walking was brisk. Pretty much a non-event from a cardio point of view, but better than sat on my ar5e.
Yeah, I liked the idea of the workout too. I was looking around the Concept 2 website yesterday after looking up the techique video. They had a page called "Workout Of the Day". It looks really good, and I'd be seriously considering using it if I had my own Erg.

Could be a really interesting way to mix it up.

Been a great week for my target so far. I think this is mainly due to consuming less (still Zero...just) Alcohol 1C10A9B6-AAFA-4EE3-A5E3-1F3976B7777A.png

I can’t read any more, my eyes are bleeding
Good luck to all on the weight loss / healthy lifestyle challanges

I am staring at a half empty Quality st box, the G&T needs a refill, there is Xmas cake in the kitchen
I am 52
5’8”
Pushing 14st (very close!)
Chest 44
Waist 34

Alcohol consumption - too high, I love a large latte coffee in the morning (non of that white water skinny milk pish)

At my peak fitness I was 13 stone, 44 chest and a 30” waist, that was only 10 years ago! Sadly I just don’t seem to have the will power! I know what I need to do - I just don’t do it!

Well Ian, you need the mindset, or an immovable target like Dan and I.

Exactly a week on and 11lb shifted! That is 20st 12lb or 131.5kg or 292lb and almost 5% shifted. Not been an easy start or week but I can see the difference in the mirror already!

This is meant as an honest question - but do you want to do anything about it, or are you content as you are?

If you do want to do something, then what is it that’s stopping you?

If you’re secretly quite content as you are, then crack on, have another slice of Christmas Cake, refill your glass, and PM me your address so I can mail you all the sweets, marzipan treats, and fat inducing goodies we’ve still got left over...

Works for me - but I’m doing all my weigh in’s as I wake up, so will do mine on Saturday morning going forward.

Going forward I’m also going to switch to my new scales, and they seem to weigh a bit heavier.

This morning on my new scales I was 90.15kg (see below)
View attachment 53459
90kg is 14 stone 1lb, new target, my weigh in tonight:

MATT:
91.6kg so target for me 86.6kg (13 stone 8lbs)

JON:
14 stone 1lb is 90kg so target 85kg (13 stone 5lbs)

Which scales are correct though? ;) Just as a reminder for everyone, remember and have the scales on a solid floor as carpet can make a difference. I'm sure we all know this, but I've seen it in the past.

The two sets of scales in my gym used to be 8% different. I "calibrated" it in my mind by sticking a 30k dumbell on and seeing what they read.

Back onto the bike for commuting today now my throat is a bit better. Now to see if I can use that for base fitness and keep up the other work at the gym/elsewhere...

Also, cornflakes in the morning; I've realised I like them plain with milk (no other toppings) and that non-Kellogs ones are actually nicer (hold their crunch longer). At work I had the Sainsbury's own brand and I noticed they're much sweeter than the Lidl own brand. Flavour-wise, my preference is actually the Lidl ones (79p per box!) and I've realised they have no added sugar whereas the Sainsbury's ones have quite a lot.

I've done that in the past, but calibrated the scale for around my weight, if it's half a kilo out at 30kg what will it be at 75 or 90kg? As for breakfasts, porridge is good but you need golden syrup otherwise you're just eating unset concrete...

I have a question I’d welcome people’s thoughts on, or at least a perspective of whether this also happens to you.

I use a Fitbit to track my resting heart rate, and this morning (according to my Fitbit) it was 56. However, on Wednesday when I put my Fitbit back on after a few days it was 66, and it’s dropped by 2 beats per day since then. This is something I often see when I’m travelling with work, and my resting rate shoots up when I don’t get enough sleep (or maybe when I drink too much - as the two often coincide)...

I’m expecting it to continue dropping until it gets to around 52 ish, which is what I think my resting rate tends to be after a period of a stable sleep pattern and limited alcohol, but I’m curious as to whether other people’s heart rate does this, and whether you think the key driver is sleep or alcohol... or is it just a **** measurement device in terms of the Fitbit?

Hi Jon, those are very good questions. I can't speak for the fitbit's measurment but light-based pulse measurement is never as good as electronic - however I believe it's got pretty decent of late. I used to have one of those HRM chest strap watches and that got my actual heart rate and I believe that's still the best way to track it, just when exercising, the wearing of a watch with a good approximation seems much more convenient and comfortable. What surprised me was when my GP measured my heart rate - using something reliable - it reported 52 repeatably and I'd just cycled to the surgery. When I was sitting at home, I was sure it was higher without having just had exercise.

As for changing your resting HR - yes, it's very easy to have that happen. A bit of caffeine will knock it up a few bpm. Bad sleep? Definitely in my experience. Booze? I'm sure it does affect it, but initially it should depress your heart rate and then bad sleep would probaby do the trick.

'Tis actually rather hard to get a real resting heart rate! the best time is if you've managed to wake naturally and haven't started moving around yet. I can think mine up 15bpm no problem!

Thanks! It was meant a bit tongue in cheek, I do need to shift a few pounds which I will probably achieve by ponding the pavement for a month or so and watching what I eat. A physically active job helps - I was quite surprised my weight an hieght (or lack of) buts me in the almost obese BMI category.

Now - about those stickies.......

Exercise today has been walking to and from airport gates and then around the various car hire places after the one I booked refused to give me a car as I only had a debit card, not a credit card. Fortunately Sixt would give me a car with only a debit card, for the bargain price of nearly 10 times the price I'd secured on line (£34 for a Corsa for 5 days became £280 for a Corsa for 5 days!!)

Food has been some chicken and some nuts and raisins. 2 coffees and 2 green teas consumed. Not sure what dinner will be this evening yet, maybe a salad of some description.

Absolutely quality of sleep has an effect. As above, the best time to measure is in the morning before getting out of bed. But I wouldn't get too hung up on minor short term variation tbh. The overall trend as fitness improves is more important.

Only ever used Polar monitors/chest strap so wouldn't like to comment on other brands. I would say, however, Polar is pretty much spot on. My Father occasionally had 24Hr monitoring at hospital. Hates it though for obvious reasons. So started running my Polar at the same time and the results were a mirror image. The Doc. is now happy to accept "our" results instead. Can transfer the recordings via email - which is nice!

Avis do debit card payments. I used them all the time until work gave me a credit card.
