And this is why Maseratis 70k spark plug change is a joke.

It seems they were trying to sell the cars rather than service them..... Oh don't worry sir, spark plugs 70k miles...... Not an important piece of kit to the engine at all. Plus when one fails you have 7 more.

Literally came off as the plug was put down. Imagine if it went into the engine!!

That sort of failure is always the guy on the tools. If you don’t have a rubber bung in the spark plug socket or use it off straight that’s what happens.

I have seen plugs of that age in good condition.

The service interval for spark plugs is just as long for other cars, VW say between 60 and 100k, NGK themselves say 100k miles. In the 90s my Alfa 33 16v had a 75k mile interval for the platinum tipped plugs, probably because they were such a complete git to change.

It’s quite unlikely that it would end up in the engine from my perspective as the bit with the thread would still be blocking the hole if it snapped before removal and if it snapped during removal the socket and rubber bung would retain it.

But having said all that, mine were changed in year 8, if only because I see the service schedule as a minimum.

I beg to differ. I used an appropriate spark plug socket, with rubber, the rubber held the top of the plug in, the bottom dropped out when I lifted it out. But I do like the way you seem comfortable with a plug being left in an engine for 13 years and 77k miles and are confident with the build quality for an item which is usually changed much more frequently.

I'll not be leaving them in their so long again (assuming the car survives to 140k)

Didn’t say it was you did I? Could have been the installer, but they don’t just fall apart at that point.

So you have to record the fact that it's had a colour change due to a wrap...I don't think many bother as they know it'll affect future value.
