2006 Gransport gear problem

Today, when I stopped at traffic lights, gears shifted down normally but when I stopped it started to make clunking noises. Clunking stopped when I selected N. But then I couldn't select 1st. It just started making clunk sounds again every 1 to 2 seconds, with a little jolt that I could feel. Only two years and less than 20000 km since last clutch was replaced due to collapsed tangs on the pressure plate. It had mild variable clutch judder on pulling away from stationary for ages beginning not long after clutch was done; only evident when pulling away slowly. Not when taking off briskly. Any thoughts on diagnosis? I'm fearing another >$5000 bill.

I think judder on pulling away is a sign the PIS was not set correctly when the clutch was changed. . .... sounds like tangs collapsed to me......... There will be someone on here with loads of better knowledge who can give you a better guide/idea

Yep, Id put my left nut on the fact your spring tangs have collapsed, same happened to me in the middle of France.

New clutch I recon, sorry.

When the old clutch comes out, see if you can check the production date, I fear you have an older kit fitted that did have problems. Circa 2008-2012 was the dodgy batch.

When you have the clutch done, insist on a new kit from Italy, don't try and save some pennies by getting something from old stock.

Also, Marios said to me once that he replaces the tube that the bearing slides on as he has seen issues leading to the collapse but I still personally recon it was a duff production run.

Same here 42% worn and then the issues you described.
I was less than a mile from home and managed to limp back, but once I tried to use 1/R it went completely.

Sounds very familoiar.

Had mine go on a GS a few years ago (2013 I think) with clutch on 40%. Matt's point about the dodgy batch of clutches was one I heard at the time as well.

Do parts have a manufacturing code or batch number associated with them that might be used to tie incidents back to a common source?

There is no current hard and fast evidence of which batch, but if we can start to gather some it wouldn’t hurt.

Tang collapses seem to be getting fewer and fewer too, which is no help to Oxytorch - sorry for your troubles :(

I was only about a mile from home too. RACQ (like AA) wouldn’t cover the tow because the towing company insisted on using a “low loader”. So it cost $225 for a one mile tow. Do our cars need low loaders or are regular tow trucks ok? I didn’t think our cars are that low.

I’m guessing by tow truck, you mean lift the front wheels and tow.

Mechanic thinks it is collapsed pressure plate again. Bell housing coming off today to confirm. I checked and it's only 10,000 km since the clutch was replaced. Is there anything in the clutch setup that could make it collapse so soon?

I suspect as others have said that there was a bad batch of Velo clutches and you have been unlucky.

Just ensure it is a new plate and not old stock item.
