Hi I just purchased a Maserati 3200GT. It was imported from Japan to Canada in 2014. It is a left hand drive model so I am suspecting that it was not an originally sold in Japan. How can we know where the car was originally sold?9881998819988199882098821

Congratulations. There may be someone along shortly more knowledgeable, but you could try emailing Maserati customer services HQ with your VIN?

They have been pretty good answering questions in the past when I had some questions….

Premium brand cars are often bought in Japan as LHD. It is a status thing apparently so do not assume it was not sold in Japan just because it is LHD.

Contact Maserati in Italy with the VIN details and proof of ownership and they should be able to help you.

I didn’t know about the LHD status thing… my Testa I imported from Japan, but it was originally made for/sold in Germany.

Most of the japanese maserati are LHD.
Probably because it accentuates their foreignness, making them seem more exotic. Same story with ferrari, bmw, porsche, bentley, lancia (think about the integrale edizione finale)...

There is a lot of maserati cars who were imported from Japan in Europe recently, 222 4v, ghibli II, quattroporte 4, 3200gt (most of them are GTA), 4200gt or gransport, all are LHD.

Vin 155 is one of the very first car. Congrats for your purchase.

Studying the vins for 4200s it was noted that the 8th space (letter) in the vin was; A for N. America, B for Europe, C for Commonwealth (RHD), and D for Asia. If the 3200s were the same, your car is a N. America car, which is logical, as the US didn't get 3200s but Canada did, and re-importation would be fairly easy.

+1. When I went to Japan it was one of the things that surprised me.

I thought I saw a website that detailed all the list of countries that the 3200GT were sold. They were figures per country.

So you think that this car was originally sold in Canada, then brought to Japan and came back. The 8th letter is an A

As I wrote before, you will be best to contact Maserati themselves as they may be able to tell you in which country, and possibly at which dealership, the car was originally sold from.
