Hello.
I have had my front Koni McPherson struts rebuilt and am having problems getting the damper rod extended enough in order to fit new coil spring and bearing assembly.
I am using a hydraulic spring compressor so it's not the amount of compression that's the issue.
Does anyone know of a tool or technique needed to do this operation?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Kind regards Andrew

i had similar when i took mine apart, in the end took them to my mechanic to sort out.

Can you screw a nut onto the top of the rod and then use that to "pull" it out as far is it will go and then super quick remove it and rebuild ?

Hi ,thanks for your reply, I am thinking this is the way to do it but don't want to damage anything using the wrong technique.

You need a damper rod clamp, you can make one from some wood or nylon and two bolts

Compress the spring

Pull rod out

Clamp rod, hold in place with a couple of screwdrivers through spring

Attach top plate

Release clamp

Release spring compressor

Remove clamp

Hi ,as an update ,I managed to extract the damper rod enough and clamped in place using a home spun nylon clamp as Oneball suggested .
Fitted the new springs to the struts.
This has now transformed the ride and handling .
Thanks for all replies.

Well done! May I ask where you got the springs from? Maybye even partnumbers? My springs are tired, so the car is too low....

Did you have the Koni shocks rebuilt? Did you do it in the UK?
