Energy crisis

We're having the house re-carpeted throughout in October, so should I burn the old stuff in the middle of the floor, make winter clothes from it, or convert one of the cars to steam power?

Cue puns about piles.....

Even at the present price cap, if they freeze it, we are still paying more than double for our electricity and 3.5x more for our gas, compared to this time last year.
So it still will be a very expensive winter for most.

Yes, much damage has already been inflicted and the Government look set to lock it in for perpetuity(?) We'll find out more tomorrow but it's already very clear that they will not be raising a windfall tax on the energy companies, presumably to help finance their transition to renewables. Be interesting to see what the market makes of tomorrow's plans.

Whatever the average use cap is, £2500 is the guess, everyone will end up paying the actual cost in the end. It’s just going to be deferred.

They are saying it may be a rate cap for 18 months more, approx 2 years then. Based on this ‘average user’ who may now be paying 4K over those 2 years, without a rate cap that may have been 10k. You can guarantee the 6k shortfall will be paid back by you in the end.

Timeframes of 10 or even 20 years are being touted. If it’s 10, you’ll be having £600/year, or £50/month added to your bill by providers for them to pay back their govt ‘loan’. On top of the new norm of £2500/year. So in reality it will probably be a 20-25% ‘surcharge’ for 10 years. A bit like the green levy.

What is asronishing there? Energy accounts for say 20% of the cost of a product. If the price of energy doubles, the price of any product increases by 20% and nobody buys it. ;)
Ummmm the fact that he thinks people will stop producing but not go bankrupt.

Democracy is not just about electing or not electing the next prime minister, it's also about saying what you want to say about the Prime Minister without fear of conviction or defenestration.
Agreed.
American democracy is in poor shape then.

Could be worse…..

Swiss citizens found to be in violation of the country’s new heating rules, which prohibit warming homes above 19°C this winter, could face daily fines of up to 3,000 Swiss francs and up to three years in prison.

New legislation covering the country’s energy supply will make heating homes to more than 19°C unlawful in the event of an energy shortage. In addition, hot water should not be heated to more than 60 degrees, and portable electric heaters, saunas, and heated swimming pools are prohibited.

To note, the World Health Organization has long held that a temperature no colder than 20°C is recommended for children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions.

Good news, Oil has dropped significantly again. US crude is trading under $83 and Brent $89. They were both over $110 during the summer but bad news the £ has dropped against the US$ so forecourt prices might not soften yet.
Natural Gas too has dropped but still around $78. It was $98 in August.
Germany has filled its gas tanks for winter so we should be good for winter. The UK has been over generating electricity during the summer by up to 15% to make up short falls on the continent whilst France's Nuclear Power Stations went offline for maintenance. I'd expect the Mail/Express to forecast doom and gloom but the reality is rosier.

Turns out I've been trying for years to persuade Mrs Crud to be more Swiss.

Half of France's Nuclear Power station will be off line until March. After which energy prices will fall.

Bet you always wondered how Covid hand outs were going to be paid for?
