Running costs…

Yeah I know, another one of those… I’ve been here before with a Coupe GT, but it was a decade ago and things didn’t matter as much in those days.

Here’s the twist; I need to present data that a MY2003 4200 is barely more expensive to run than an Audi B7 RS4. If I can, then I can have one!

Engines are the same, tyres are the same. Fuel is where it suffers but I can probably find something generous somewhere. Real world has anyone any numbers though?

What are the indies (London or Home Counties) charging for an annual service these days?

Clutch and all discs have just been done so they’re ok. So who has spent recently, and on what..?

After feeling the blood drain when I saw the official MPG figures and knew would have to show them, it turns out that the RS4’s figures are exactly the same!

According to my book of Maserati Man Maths, the 4200 is cheaper to run than the RS4, and has better residuals. An annual service at Sports Italia will only be a few hundred, and if you restrict yourself to downhill journeys, the MPG is hardly worth a mention. So, crack on.

Are you welcoming a list of expenditure and horror stories?

Wishbones
Oil leak
Various drive line bearings failing such as torque tube and gearbox stub axles
Auxiliary tensioner pulley
Oil leak
Clutch, flywheel, release bearing, spigot bearing
Brake lines
Oil leak
Original cats turned to dust
Radiator, thermostat, temp sensor
Heater matrix
Did I mention oil leak?

I think i am only a few parts away from having a brand new car (I am going to regret saying that)

My favourite on the list has to be this:

Spending money on unnecessary mods

Followed by:

Spending more money fixing the unnecessary mods so that they work correctly

Generally concludes with:

P!ssed off wife

It’s worth knowing, thank you. My Coupe ran for 23k miles without an issue and it was very leggy, 77k I think when Dickie G bought it off me. Use seemed to help. I will need to commit to commuting in this…

The Audi is 14 years old and needed £1500 of suspension work last year because ‘they all do’. It’s no paragon of virtue, it’s a monster just the same.

Interesting the road tax on a 4200 is £340 rather than £600 and it’s several hundred less to insure!

I will also have to commit to being ‘mod free’. However, if all 4 springs were to fail at the same time and be replaced with some nice FD ones at its first service, so be it.

A big warm welcome back my friend. It has been some time. How are you keeping…Do you still have that DB9 ? Great to have you back after all these years.

I am sure Matt will be along soon about servicing as things have moved in massively on Sportsmaserati as Matt has started his own own indie in SportsItalia which has gone from strength to strength.

If you are handy with a spanner or two a lot of things are doable yourself which can save a lot of labour costs.
Good Luck :)

I'm thinking about buying one so have been ringing around for prices on servicing (in the London/ south east)

Average costs seem to be around 700 for small service, 1000 ish for a bigger one with spark plugs and for the main mileage service it is more like 1300+ ish

The general servicing and fuel is the cheap bit,.
It’s the rolling restoration that costs the money....
Anyway it’s all part of the fun!

Well that dream crashed and burned - the engines aren't Euro 4 compliant and as of October I will live inside the ULEZ zone. It would cost me £12.50 to drive it every day. That isn;t going to work.

That's actually a pretty long held dream crushed :(

Naw, long gone Andy, 6 years back? It was bought by the composer Tchiakovsky's great grandson to add to his collection. He said he'd probably never drive it but it looked nice!

They are after 2004 in cars with primary cats incorporated into the manifold.

Well, there's a claim to fame! I trust his arrival to collect was heralded by some immense canons and the defeat of a French invasion?

I would agree, I think if I had put my car into a dealer or specialist garage for every job I would have doubled or trebled the cost of ownership. I might have done it anyway, but it makes the man math's a bit easier.

The 06 & 07 cars are Euro 4 compliant. They have much higher road tax but avoid the ULEZ charge.

I use Matthew at Giallo cars to look after my GS. I'd recommend him. He knows the cars very well and doesn't overcharge, he's also happy to work with pattern parts etc... just generally keeps the car running well and running costs in check.

They are still expensive to run and always need more than a basic service, so I'd budget more like £3k a year as a commuter. Suspension is probably the biggest recurring cost as they eat wishbones / tie rods / drop links - about £6k for everything, and the replacement cycle lasts about 40-50k miles for me. Clutch life varies but I live in London and am on track to get more than 50k out of the current clutch.

If you have a long-ish commute I think it would make every day special and I'd go for it. These cars like being used and will take the miles.
