How odd is this

Opened passenger door on my QP at weekend to hear something drop and found this. Passenger side carbon door trim just fell off! Last time I looked at it it was unmarked, lots of cracks now.

Car had not been used for a few days, it’s not often anyone else is in the car.
Very odd. Anyone had this before?

Are the fitting studs on the back of it or has the glue broken down and come away from the studded bar it attaches too.

If the cracks are just in the clear coat finish then a local body shop should be able to sand it back and re laquer the carbon fibre for you. You will just need to bond it back onto the studded bar then.

The panel is still firmly attached to the door.
It seems the glue has given up the ghost. What’s odd is all the cracks. Hopefully just the clear coat as you say.

Maybe, but there is multiple cracks over 50% of its length. Must admit, I’m no expert on the cracking properties of carbon fibre panels!

Yes we see this a lot. Door caps seem to fair worst.

I beleive the sun is baking the glue.

I feel your carbon skin has shattered on impact.

Maybe it fell off last time the door was shut and got trapped, hence the cracks, then fell out when you opened it.

I used a place in Northampton to refurb some carbon winglets for my old GTS, can hunt out their details if that helps.

Thanks. Hopefully there will be a carbon fibre place a bit nearer to me in south Manchester/Cheshire. There should be, there’s loads of carbon fibre strewn range rovers all over the place round here!

As far as sun baking the glue goes, it did get to the heady heights of 18 degrees round here at the weekend. I even wore a short sleeved shirt. (It was -1 the evening before though..)

Years ago, when I thought that I might be able to afford a Ferrari 456, someone pointed out that if you have a front-end shunt at anything over 5mph, the carbon fibre bonnet shatters in the corner nearest the impact and then you have an £18k bill. Rather off-putting.

We have all the skills in Northampton. It gets a bit thin as you move out towards Wellingborough. Earls Barton is the cut off between skilled and not so skilled.

Carbon fibre does not cope with knocks at all unfortunately.

The irony here is that the place Scaf is probably talking about is Streamline Carbon in........Earls Barton

I thought Earl's Barton was basically the (or at least a) peak of expertise. Certainly in
Batteries
Aircon
Brake upgrades
VCDS
Inordinate amounts of vodka (I think) and........
Pizza!

Yes, it seems, as conaero says, the small drop to the floor from door panel cracked it all over!
I paddled carbon kevlar slalom boats for years and every one of them had to have an aluminium strengthener bonded into the nose and tail where I snapped them off.
