It looks like it’s going up to £600 a year for us Maserati coupe/spyder owners.

Mods remove another of my threads as it seems I've made a mistake again.

I've got five cars and its £1975 for the year now. I know that in context of what we all spend its not a lot but it niggles away at me. For the two older (and high CO2) cars I buy 12 months tax in the spring (I'm not paying the DD supplement) and then I SORN them in November ish. Trouble is they insist on sending the refunds as cheques which is a strange thing to see these days.

The whole system is a right royal pain and paying a disproportionate amount of tax for cars barely used based on an arbitrary system, steering the buying public into inappropriate choices of vehicles, really grates. Put it on fuel and charger use and have it proportionate to the miles actually covered. Oh and here is an idea, spend some of the money on fixing the bloody potholes PROPERLY.

Taxing online, declaring SORN; its a simple process. Tax for months you use it.
I actually think it couldnt be easier....

It is largely a good system but they could refund to the card used to purchase the tax rather than sending a cheque by snail mail and they could easily enough charge by the day not the month.

and while we are in grumpy old man mode, how much money is made when buying / selling a car mid month - the seller is only entitled to claim full months back but the purchaser has to buy tax for the previous days in the month already expired !!

Yes I will be doing this now - the government will not be making more money here.

I worked this out when they changed it. About 8 million used cars change hands each year (covid excepted).
https://obr.uk/forecasts-in-depth/tax-by-tax-spend-by-spend/vehicle-excise-duty/ reckons average VED of £175/year so 175/12 * 8million is 116million per year.
