I’m pressing pause...

Hi all,

I’ve been posting less on this forum, and recently have been limited to posts about what I drink, what I weigh, and the colour of my Gransport interior... Not legendary, and I recognise I won’t be a massive loss...

I get that it’s really easy (and in many ways kinda dumb) to think that just because we all like Maserati’s that we would all like each other in real life. I’m not that stupid. I’m also not (IMO) particularly sensitive. However, there’s recently been too many comments I read on various threads that I don’t like, too many arguments that feel unnecessarily vicious and a bit too personal, and there’s not enough stuff I read that makes me laugh, that makes me feel uplifted, or which educates me.

So, for now, I’m pressing pause, taking a digital detox, and I will be back in a month or so.. I really hope the new measures that Conaero, Zep and others are about to introduce help bring this forum back to what it used to be about...

out for now,

Jon

@JonW, no! That’s a loss, albeit a temporary one. Come back soon, hopefully as removed of toxic elements as the corners of this forum that I think many are tired of.

PS - I love the interior (and exterior) of your GS.

I have also moved away on a similar basis. There are probably 20 members who account for 90% of the posts on this forum. There is a message there. I just get bored reading largely the same content over and over being posted - shares, wine, the next big investment, etc. I might add, this is not unique to this forum. It is the same over on 911UK for Porsche - but that forum is profusely populated with DIYers having a go and screwing up a small job into a much bigger one instead of admitting they ain't no Porsche-trained technicians but commenting as though they are. This is infuriating for me to read on 911UK. The same small number accounting for 90% of posts boasting how many posts they have made (largely trash content)

I have rarely 'ignored' anyone deliberately but a 'ignore thread' would be useful.

But on balance people come and go, if the forum no longer brings you pleasure no one forces you to log on... post about I'm leaving and here is the reason are rather like closing the stable door.

Sorry to hear that pal, all the best. I think every user should take this forum and it's posts with a pinch of salt. if you see something of value, use it, otherwise disregard and forget it.

For me when I fasted during Ramadan and giving social media a miss I really felt the benefits for what I was doing.
This year in so many ways has been very hard for many of us.
Having worked hard most of my life to suddenly stop apart from my own projects the house and workshop here in France.
But not chasing the money has really made me think differently.
Once my workshop is complete I'm not working everyday that's for sure.

Same here phil we retired early 2 years ago and have spent that time renovating a house which we now live in. Mrs 1963 has been doing some bank work but I think this year we’re going to get back into some sort of work as I can see it being a non starter for planing trips away that we want to do. The extra cash will come in handy as you probably know renovating anything doubles in costs by the time it’s done. Have a family trip planned in France for April but can’t see that happening.

Hopefully once life returns to normal and we can get about a bit more we'll all be putting some more miles on our cars and the percentage of on-topic conversation will rise.
I think you have hit the nail on the head there. Without the use of our cars, the highs and lows, people have turned to off topic content and this here we are today.

Funnily enough, I stopped posting on the Ferrari website about two months ago, just lost interest in what was being said which was pretty much the same every day from the same posters. Missed posting stuff for a couple of weeks then found I didn't miss it at all. Other things took over. I still visit maybe once a week but it doesn't bother me if I forget.

I have to agree this would be a welcome update to the forum - perhaps one that could be part of the up and coming changes?
I personally think it already has an ignore button, the forum member!
Read title, if of no interest, don't read content. Thats what I do.
I do exactly the same on other forums too.
Everyone has their own opinions and the report button, moderators and each member has the ability to control what they do or don't read. Getting in to a slanging match of words is pointless. If we don't like it, just report it and/or ignore It. Simples.

Sorry to hear you’re taking a break Jon and hope to see you back soon.

My own throughts having been using forums for years is that this really isn’t new and never will go away. Forums bring together people that have a shared interest but that there’s no way many of us would socialise together in real life. Nothing wrong with that it’s just how things are.

That does mean that you inevitably will see and read things that don’t interest you, aren’t funny to you, bore you to tears and sometimes go against something you believe in.

Any posts of an insulting type should be moderated. I think however you just have to learn to ignore things and genuinely don’t click on the threads that you know will annoy you.

My posts generally follow the path of a hit and then a few days of quiet simply because I don’t have the time to post most of the time. If I see something of no interest to me I literally ignore it.

To be a forum user I think you have to engage your ignore feature and try not to take things to heart.
And I would add that this is most definitely the most civil of forums I’ve used. And without doubt the biggest disease the bigger forums have are false personas and group strength. There is without doubt a large number of people presenting themselves different from their real selves but I don’t see that here thank god.

You mean there will be more lights on the dash and repairs requiring guidance. :D

100%. Once this car forum can revert once more to being dominated by discussions about, er, cars then I hope a lot of the peripheral stuff will die a natural death. Starved of oxygen, many topics will wither and die, and we shall all rejoice.

All - thanks for the comments... and thanks to those who got in touch through other channels.

My sense of frustration is not linked to any single individual, and I completely get that COVID has been sh.it for all of us and therefore tempers and manners are fraying...

However, I’m honest enough to admit I may have over-reacted, I like the introduction of the new mods, and let’s see how we go...I am also going to experiment with the ignore feature...

Sensible words, let’s ban you before you become a mod.

Joking aside, I’ve also read some things that have turned me off the forum however i also agree that the year, and it’s lack of car related topics, as well as Maserati and their lack of things to talk about (mc20 aside) mean that the moment is unusual and I think it will pass. I stay away of certain threads and focus only on the ones of interest.

I’ve met some good friends here, and some that I’m not so fond of. However, i can say that this forum has the most longevity of any I’ve contributed to and that probably says something (no jokes about my ability to produce longevity please).

Jon, I’m delighted that you’re re-considering, and hope that you decide to stay - I’ve really enjoyed our exchanges over recent months!

I feel a huge sense of responsibility for all that is being said by everybody in this thread (and other threads).
My reply to Benny’s post has had consequences which I‘d not expected at all: I’ve suddenly found myself at the the centre of a storm. I apologise to all of you. Wish I’d bitten my tongue, but it’s too late now.

I hadn’t appreciated, until now, the depth of feeling against some of the threads I contribute to, most notably the shares thread, and I will rectify that. I’m glad that people are communicating this, otherwise I’d never know.

I really hope we can collectively kick 2020 out the door and make a fresh, positive start in 2021 ...
