3200GTA 2002 Fuel pumps

You can buy the pump alone directly based on those part numbers but your dealer will probably refuse to fit them.
They seem to cost 160€ each.

Still, better make absolute sure they need replacement.
If they were dying, I would expect them to maintain pressure at idle or prior to start and then drop while under load.
Your hard starting symptoms and then driving fine once the car is started seem to point away from pressure problems.
But that's just my opinion.

OK a couple of months later & the hard start problem is no more. I was concerned that they were repairing the car by trial & error replacing both fuel pumps and fuel rails. However they said that the fuel rail welds had fractured & were losing pressure. Car goes like a train now & very smooth.

Did they refund the fuel pumps?

I would have tought that fractured fuel rails would cause fuel to leak and cause a fire when the engine is hot.
Or am I missing something ?

Correct observation. Sounds like a strange (i chose a mild word here) explanation for your problems.

*Might* cause a fire. I've sprayed fuel all over engine bays before without it going up in flames. Not recommended though :)

I have seen a car go up in flames due to a burst fuel hose spraying fuel over the engine head.
This was a fiat 131 where the engine was not nearly as hot as the 3200

Whether the fuel pumps were a cover up for ordering the rails or not I don't know. This is a main stealer after all. As the car is past it's useful life as far as they are concerned they let me buy the bits myself, so not done for commercial gain. This is a 3rd world country & I am just glad to get the problems out of the way & mrs. Tompelli off my neck.

There are two identical fuel pump assemblies in the 3200 which looks like this:

View attachment 33419

The actual pump is a bosch one and is just a part of it.

Is the first number on that product code "0"?
So complete number on pump would be "0 580 453 443" and correct product would be for example this:

I can now confirm that pumps with Bosch number "0 580 453 443" Do fit on 3200GT. Just replaced mine today and first expression is marvelous with new pumps. I think that i just found my missing horses back =) Thottle response is a LOT better and so is the acceleration! For total 82euros spent, not bad. Not bad at all.

How did you get along with the rubber? spacer that surrounds the pump? Was it ok to re-use?

I am also interested in how you undid the rings that holds pumps into the tank - I tried to make a tool but not enough leverage. I did hear of a source for the rubber pump surrounds that are apparently failing due to ingredients in modern fuel but not sure if they still have stock.

how did you get on with the plastic connecting hoses? They looked to be heatshrunk into place and i was really nervous of replacing these, so i got a complete assembly from David Askew (which is in and working well) but i would have considered replacing the pump if thoses hoses could be done?

Yes, i was surprised to see that rubber parts were almost unharmed. On my Alfas they have always been just like bubblegum...
Might have something to do with the fuel used. This car has never seen fuels with ethanol content more that 5% (always used 98 octane fuel which is E5 in Finland)

I put one M6 bolt on one of the locking ring holes and with big screwdriver and hammer tapped ring open. It was not too tight and opened quite easily...

I took them off really carefully by pulling and levering with screwdriver. Connection seemed tight when i installed old hose back on to new pump but i secured connection anyway with fuel hose clip. 12mm was the correct size.

It was most probably the best thing for it!

Sorry to bump an old thread.

I have found out that the 550 uses a very similar fuel pump, and Ferrari supplies not only the whole assembly but also individual parts.

The pump itself is the same Bosch 0 580 453 443.
The filters look extremely similar.
The rubber gasket should be the same.

I have also found some in-tank fuel hoses with heat shrink ends.
Does anyone know which hose fits for 3200?

Could you not run some fuel system cleaner through it although i dont know if there are adverse problems related to this so i would give Mike at maserati shed a call as he will likely have some used pumps or potentially also be able to give you an idea of what he thinks is going on and what things to try prior to you having to shell out for the pumps.

Sorry to hear of your issues and hope you get them sorted!

The rubber "gaskets" that holds the pumps, are disintegrating because of age and -probably- E10 fuel. Adding a fuel system cleaner will not fix this.... You have to change the parts and clean the tank meticulously
